Vancouver Council Update?

Last week the Vancover City Council was suppose to review the previously passed bylaw allowing "lst floor incalls".

There was speculation they would reverse the just passed by law per the Globe and Mail when folks got upset and realized it would violate bawdy.

But I've searched the Globe and Mail and boards and unless I missed it I have heard nothing about the Council meeting that was to have happened last week.

Anyone know anything new on the Vancouver situation?

Gee, Paige..and I've never met you (I don't think) but you probably saw me active on other boards when I was liking Victoria so much a few years ago. But now you moved to more Americanized Vancouver! But probably more business there.

I do need to return at least to Victoria, but off to Toronto / Niagara Falls again for 12 days starting next week.

Gee ... Dave in Phoenix. Freakin' yankee arrogance that defines any City in Canada with degrees of Americanization. What a pile of new-world-order crapola! Your comment is not too unlike seeing the glass half empty ... now go take Sonny's advice.

I don't think Vancouver is ever americanized..., we have better looking women than them, better services than them.... better Chinese than them... and more civilized than them....

WEll, DIP just talks like BUSH.....a freakin cowboy from Dallas.... with probably the 3-kings on his forehead...

Ok Guys..and gals....

As I report when I mean too Americanized I was referring to the sex trade where I found lots of U.S. type scams, high prices and often bad attitudes in sexworkers...just like in the U.S. I go to Canada to escape the "American" attitude in sexwork as well as enjoy the legal status of sexwork in Canada which results in far more women choosing the career (private consenting adult sexwork)

I realize this may be an unfair over generalization but I found (now years ago) I had no interest in Vancouver based on monitoring boards for years and my "reserach" visit. I found Victoria, Montreal, Toronto and from all indications Niagara Falls (Canada of course) wonderful vs Vancouver.

I also am sensitive to the term "American" since Canada is part of "America" (North America). But I gave up trying to include Canada in that definition since most Canadians I find refer to the U.S. as America, not making the connection that Canada is also in America.

As I have said I should reserach Vancouver again to give it another chance, but that is all I meant by Vancouver being too "Americanized".

Now...BTW... I assume no one knows the answer to my original questions... The Vancouver Council meeting last week to reconsider the 1st floor "bawdy" bylaw which was a great idea if it stands.

I doubt the bylaw would stand. How can you have a municipal bylaw that contradicts the criminal code? Not a hope in hell.

In response to your original question Dave

The council decided to reverse their decision on this bylaw and the four councillors who voted in favour of this bylaw decided to change their votes.

Now Larry Campbell is suggesting a community forum to discuss other solutions to make working conditions safer for prostitutes.

Here is a link to a thread on the entire saga. There are some newslinks on the story in the thread.

Thanks for the link... actually that was the thread I was watching and the article referenced:

http://www.canada.com/vancouver/story.asp?id=8E1BD80C-3953-4BA4-A77D-F8B0E42E5828

It said "in a move almost never seen in local politics, Councillor Anne Roberts said she and Councillor Ellen Woodsworth will make a motion to reconsider the decision at next Tuesday's council meeting. (That would have been last Tuesday).

The only hope seems to be:
Roberts said she also plans to ask for a staff report detailing the implications of allowing escort and dating services into the new zone. She will consider whether to introduce a bylaw amendment to allow them after she gets that information, she said.

I simply had not seen any news reports after the last Tuesday meeting to see if there was anything of interest brought up. I agree the article implied it defininately would be reversed, just haven't seen an article about the Council actually doing it at the referred to Tuesday session.

More Americanized Vancouver

If Vancouver is by definition part of America then how much more can it be Americanized? It is.

Having said that, Dave has travelled extensively in Canada and is quite familiar with us. It was just the way he said it.

Can you imagine what other fellow Americans who have never been here know about us or the rest of the world?

Reminds me when ABC called us a village in Canada when the Whitecaps beat Cosmos in a soccer final

Geeze, I'm VERY opposed to most everything Bush has done!

Once I was once attacked on a board by Canadians by referring to the U.S. as Americans. They were upset that I had exluded Canadians as Americans since Canada is clearly part of America.

Then over the years I've learned the opposite, that most Canadians don't want to considered "Americans" even though they are in America (North America as is the U.S.).

So in my attempt to be politically correct, culturally sensitive, and not offend, I'm attacked which ever way I use the term. Based on years of discussing with Canadians I am now convinced:

While Canada is clearly in America ,most don't want to be considered Americans. But if I exlude them - some - the minority will argue they are part of America as they are geographically.

Geeze some (only a few like Squirrel) Canadians just want to make an issue of such a silly point...or they are ignorant of geography. I bet even on Canadian made maps, there is a continuent of North America in which Canada is still included!

After reporting that they were going to overturn the law, I guess actually doing it was just a formality and wasn't considered that news worthy. There may have been a blurb about them actually overturning the bylaw but I haven't seen it either. The actual reversal wouldn't be considered sensationalized enough to be considered worthy of a big story.
