The U.S.A. Is A Deviant Country When It Comes To Legislating Right Wing "Morality"!

I had the displeasure to view the police on my local news tonight bragging about their multi-force efforts to rid the metropolitan area of prostitution. Ads have been placed by police in adult sections of publications, and ads have been answered by police. Customers and providers are targets, and great joy is attained by the police as they bust innocent people, haul them away in hand-cuffs, and ruin their lives. Our society and our justice system are sick! Criminals run free while many caring, sensual individuals become victims. ---Moe

I agree Dr Moe, the US justice system is pretty messed up. It rather ironic that the US is called the land of the free and yet it has the highest incarceration rate in the world. The police spend a lot of time and money enforcing stupid laws. Who are they protecting when they arrest escorts and clients who are engaging in a consensual activity behind closed doors.

The morally repressive right wing religous zelots exert way too much political influence in the US.

Yes, It Is Pretty Messed Up!

You are right, Sirlickheralot. I am further dismayed by the joy and sense of misguided righteousness that the U.S. police derive from the police forces' deplorable activities. ---Moe

er... ya think they are worse than us? In Edmonton, they do monthly busts on street walkers. They also do stings on outcall massage and unlicenced escorts on a monthly basis. They are in the middle of trying to get "johns" cars seized if they are caught soliciting in public. There are signs "guilting" johns with their messages of "who really pays?" as the graphics include srynges, used condoms and a photo of a dead street walker. Yeah... we should throw stones.

Granny I agree that prostitution laws are still too right wing for my tastes, but compared with the gestapo tactics employed by the US police forces, our prostitution laws and the police seem pretty liberal. How many times have you heard of Canadian Police putting ads in the paper or on the internet posing as escorts and then arresting all the clients that show up. Tactics like this are common in the US. In my opinion the only people who should be arrested for anything related to prostitution are pimps are johns who frequent underage prostitutes.

PS If I'm not mistaken Dr Moe lives in the US so he is throwing stones at his own government and police officers.

Out of whack

A world that doesn't flinch when bombs go off that kill children yet has to spend the kinds of public dollars that are spent to invade consensual adult interaction is a pretty f*cked up world.

While there is no question a portion of the adult sex industry is influenced by criminal activity (particularly, apparently, in the US), it is not that portion that ever really suffers from the LE crackdowns.

I had a buddy lose his car for a weekend (they threatened permanently but relented) near Sea-Tac for cruising and picking up a SW who was an undercover sting. They scared the crap out of him and made him come back down for a court appearance and made damn sure it was as inconvenient, stressful and embarassing as possible. He cannot readily travel to US and is trying, at great expense, to get some wording out of his US file that implies he is a sexual predator (which is screwing his chances at a job in the US he wants). This incident was a few years back and I understand as bad or worse now. This makes no sense in relation to the "crime".

One example of what I am sure are many.

first off when you go into a foreign land you haave to learn to play by their rules. Also nobody goes crusing the strip. what you find out there are the closest thing to bottom of the food chain. The laws have been on the books for years are they right or wrong, who the hell knows, you just have to figure out away around the rules and go for it. Listen to your gut instinct and dont expose yourself to LE.

First... to Sirlickheralot...

Three years ago in Sherwood Park, Alberta (a satellite community to Edmonton), the RCMP were bored. So they rented a bigrig, parked it at the Road King Truck Stop and called licenced escorts to come to the truck to "do the trucker" that was, of course, an u/c cop. When the gal got to the truck, the u/c would jump out, engage her in conversation and then, ultimately, she was popped for soliciting in public. 10 girls and two drivers were caught up in the sting. How's that for gestapo? And the reason the cops don't pose as escorts, is because there is no point. It is not illegal to be an escort in Canada; all discussions occur in private between the client and the lady (except at the truck stop) and so there are no laws governing this type of exchange.

To HowieMeeker: In Edmonton (can't speak for other places) a gal not only has to submit to a police clearance, but there is an additional waiver at the bottom of the clearance that submits the person to a check against known sex offenders (I'm not sure how it is done, but the implication is that they don't want deviants in the biz). I can't begin to tell you how offensive I find this to be. Consensual sex with adults simply can't and shouldn't be confused with predation.. and yet, the cops seem to find the time to do these stupid checks. spit spit

Well if you all remember many years ago the Penthouse was shut down for having ladies solicting on the premises. At that time the Richards, Seymour stroll did not exist. The cops wre incredibly stupid for what it did was force the ladies out on the street.Dumb Dumb Dumb.Fortunately the last few years they seem to be turning a blind eye in most communitys to the escort business and the massage parlours. But as for our so called friends south of the border the right wing church fanatics(I am sorry thats what they are) give way too much to the Republican party and there is no way that those laws will ever be liberalized.

Always focusing on the desperate & skanky end of it. Pathetic.
No wonder this profession will never be accepted with images like this out there.
The right wing zealots and the lackey politicians that kowtow to them need to distort the real picture to prop up their weak moral positions. They focus in on the worst part of this industry, the drug addicts and pimped out girls and try to mislead the public into believing that this is repressentative of the industry as a whole.

They use the same tactics to justify their war on drugs. Take the Gateway Theory for instance, their main justification for marijuana being illegal. They keep using this theory to bolster their position even though their own studies have shown it to be completely false. Only a little over 6% of marajuana users ever try cocaine and only 3.5% of them ever use heroin. What percentage of hard drug users tried beer, or ate a hamburger before they tried hard drugs, perhaps one of these things is the cause of addiction to hard drugs if you go by their logic.

I do have to admit that you all make me chuckle down here with your ranting and raving about the right wing extreme trying to stamp out prostitution. Any one that says that is nor really very knowledgeable about the way things work down here,

It has nothing to do with the right wing zealots. It has everything to do with politics. Both democrats and republicans do it. It builds up there tough on ctime stats, actually the easiest to bust and to prosecute. And the cops do it to show how there fighting crime and to show the politicians that they need more money in there budget.

in Edmonton... a cop is on trial for a traffic accident which claimed the life of one child and seriously injured his brother. While on the stand, the cop actually pointed a finger at the Force. Said the pressure to hand out tickets was unbelievable (he claims he was speeding after two cars that were ahead of him). Ha! the press went nuts over the admission (albeit from a scared witness at his own trial) that there are actually quotas. (Like we didn't know....)

and this leads me to consider... 1000 johns last year (at $400 per); an equal number of SWs (at approx. $300 each). Then there are the massage (outcall) and escort (unlicenced) at $2500 minimum each...

kinda adds up after a bit, don't it?

How did this persecution start anyway?

I mean, I remember studing about ancient Mesopotamia in University where prostitution started some 7-9,000 years ago with priestesses doing the deed for "offerings" was widely accepted. Then I recall Mary Magdalene being a whore that Jesus Christ accepted 2,000 years ago and yet the religious right now frown on it and abhor it. Did they edit the bible and take that part out and replace it with victimless crimes being the root of all evil? Are they total hypocrites or did I miss something?
I had a discussion with one of my American clients who said that persecuting prostitution and marijuana employs a lot of police, prison gaurds, judges, and parole officers who would otherwise be out of work. Remember Clinton promised to reduce unemployment, then instituted the 3 strike rule...
Hmmm poor Americans, maybe they should all move up here?

Another consequence of the "LE" factor

Interesting that in places where it is accepted and legal (Germany, NSW and Victoria in Australia, Chile etc.), the quality is high and the prices are low.

Interesting.....

well... prostitution is legal in Canada, Howie

... its just difficult to ply the trade without break "other" laws. What we really need is destigmatization (they did that recently in Germany). What that would mean, is that instead of "entertainer", I could put prostitute without fear of rejection on any application (rental accommodation, loan, etc.). Imagine... thousands upon thousands of sex workers being able to ply their trade without worry. Ha! Think that would make for happier customers too in the long run??

Ditty - you may be a helluva pooner but your global economics needs work

Australia's economy down the tubes? Mexico? Chile?

Are you nuts? These places have had WAY better GDP growth than the majority of the G7.

Chile has been on a steady rise for 15 years, Mexico about a decade and Oz came out of the past "slump" stronger than Canada (Oz dollar has risen faster against US dollar than any major currency).

What business news you been reading dittman?

a steady rise compared to what, every one knows that the u.s is the engine that pulls the world economy. Ive been to mexico several times and if there economy is on the rise then i would hate to see what the olace looks like when there in a slump, there poverty makes our look like we are all millionaires.

But that isnt the point even though we have more problems down here then carter has pills, and i detest the extreme right and the extreme left, everybody hates us(whoa is me), including our"friends to the north", even though we do good works through out the world, i wouldnt want to live nay where else. I think the rest of the world has penis envy. But so goes life.

i think ill try this place oz out some time. sounds like a place i want to be maybe.
