The Love Detector

A Digital Love Detector

A new software system known as The Love Detector makes it possible to assess levels of love by analyzing voices, according to its distributor. The device is based on layered voice analysis, which was originally developed for security work, and measures 129 parameters of a speaking voice that can determine levels of emotion, certainty and embarrassment among other things.

The Love Detector, a toned-down version of the original device that is available for personal use, measures five of the 129 parameters: anticipation, concentration, embarrassment, excitement and love. It is a Pocket PC version that picks up the speaker’s voice and shows the five measures in bar graphs.

The distributor plans to release a simplified version that is built into sunglasses in 2004. The Love Detector was created for people between the ages of 18 and 35, and though the results are described as “arguably accurate” and useful as a “psychological stepstool,” it is primarily an entertainment tool.
