WORLD CUP

France was grouped with one of the least difficult groups - Group G - one Asian and a neophyte African team - ie: no European teams. Yet their tie to South Korea forces France to have to win against Togo to advance to round 2, which is now a little more difficult since one of their lead strikers was yellow carded (in desperation in the last half against South Korea) and prevented to play against Togo. The tie to South Korea was the key that opened the French casket. France appears on the verge of dissension. Upon the South Korean score, the French media turned from skeptical to scathing against their own team. Bon chance, et Adieu!

Germany beat Poland and Costa Rica, but so did Ecuador. The difference is that Ecuador has a plus-5 goal differential to Germany's plus-3. Ecuador only needs to tie Germany to win their Group (A). Germany stands poised to come in second. If it becomes true, it will be an embarrassment to the host. Losing to Ecuador, a little no-name country most Germans probably never knew existed, would be the ultimate slap in the face. Entschuldigung Deutschland, jetzt Angst Sie nicht doch haben?

yahoooo

I am always happy when the french are humiliated! I am surprised they haven't surrendered yet.....they can always surrender to someone....

Not such a big deal for the Germans - losing based on goal differnetial isn't huge and once you have made the 16 it really doesn't matter since you will have to play all the "best" teams eventually if you are to win it all.

Personally.............Go Ghana!!

South Korea finished fourth in World Cup 2002. Thats 4th place out of 32 teams. Hardly a team one can take lightly. Remember too although the teams may not be based in Europe many of the players are.

Just finish 1st or 2nd in your group and you move on. Germany will do that easily and i think France will squeak by too.

Good point, it seems to be forgotten already.
Why does everybody think only white guys -England, France, Germany, Italy et al-can play soccer? Why wouldn't the Koreans do well?

Because Kimchi has very little nutritional value and they eat too much of it.

they should

The Koreans should do well....they still have potential this year even tho' their game looks scrambly.

Remember back to when Cameroon was the underdog? I wanted those guys to win so badly. I would love to see an African team win - especially in Germany....poor little goosestepping fans would freak!

I think Equador was under rated coming in. After all, they were third in South America behind Brazil and Argentina which is where just about every other team in the world would be. Another case of mainstream media (European this time) not looking at the world around them. As for Germany, unfortunately for them, they get to host the World Cup at a time when they probably have the weakest team thay have fielded in a long time.

In the meantime, doesn't Brazil look like a team which needs to get their collective shite together?

Bwhwhahah!!!

As years tick by countries based in South America, Asia, Africa, and maybe even North America who haven't had much success in World Cup play will be closing the gap towards their European counterparts.

My 2 cents worth!

First, there is a European team in with the France, South Korea, and Togo. Did everyone forget about Switzerland?

Ecuador will give Germany a run for their money (Euro or otherwise) and could easily be 1st in Group A. That would set up a England vs Germany in the 1st knock out stage, Auf Weidersen Germany!

I couldn't be happier seeing the USA being humilated by the Czechs and it was only Keller who kept them in the game with Italy!

My selection for the 'final four' would be England vs Argentina and Brazil vs Spain.

For the final, my heart says England, but my head says Argentina. Brazil should make it but they have to 'get their act together', if not then Spain can take them.

One final thought. I hope none of the knock out games go to the 'shot out format'. Although it can be exciting to watch, it really is not the way a 'team sport' should be decided, yet there are time restrictions and regulations that really leave no other option.

Any team that qualifies to compete in the World Cup should be taken seriously, but at the last World cup in 2002 there were some very dubious decisions made by ref’s regarding goal’s disallowed and players sent off that only benefited the Korean’s and helped them to progress to the final four teams.

Goals allowed, disallowed because of ref error, or not? Thanx for your input woof22.

In the 1966 World Cup the Koreans defeated Italy 1 one goal to nil (0). Italians hung their head in shame and asked how could this be? ANSWER: Countries around the world are improving.

Flash forward to World Cup 2006, South Korea (North Korea i'm not sure) is ranked 29th in the world. It seems fitting that there here considering the World Cup has 32 teams and they are ranked 29th. It should be noted that there are European teams that are ranked lower yet they still managed to qualifiy. Switzerland is ranked 35th...Ukraine is ranked 45th and on it goes.
