Folks... the world is going all to hell. I just read some shocking research findings on Heroin addicition. I'm afraid for humanity:

1) 4 out 5 of heroin addicts smoked pot before moving on to harder drugs therefore pot is a gateway and common factor among heroin addicts. (I.E. smoking pot can lead to heroin addiction)

2) 95% of all heroin addicts drank milk as children therefore milk is a gateway and common factor among heroin addicts (I.E. drinking milk as a child can lead to heroin addiction)

I think I will have to remove breast feeding from my own repertoir of behaviours!

Don't forget TV - 100% of all drug users have either seen TV, heard about TV or can spell TV. The correlation is irrefutable, the causation may be questionable, the suggestion is silly but the allegation has been made.

What is SHOCKING about these drug research findings is that our neighbour south of the border actually believe them.

The stupidity of researchers never ceases to amaze me, actually. I read about idiotic studies with dubious results all the time.

Here is a statement which should be tattooed onto their foreheads, so they can't help but remember it:

"Correlation does not imply causation".

It means that because two things tend to go together, does not automatically mean that one caused the other.

It means that (and this is a made up example) if you do a study which finds that people who eat more than the average amount of broccoli have a lower rate of certain types of cancer, this does NOT imply that brocolli prevents cancer. This does not mean the news media should write lots of stories advising everyone to eat broccoli.

It may be instead that vegetarians tend to eat more broccoli than the average person, and that it is the lack of red meat in their diets which is giving them a lower rate of the certain types of cancer.

Frequently it is the case that two things go together because they are both being caused by some third thing, not because one of them caused the other.

Researchers somehow haven't seemed to have figured this out, and the news media will print anything which sounds sensational. End result: don't trust anything you read ;)

Kinda like children being hereditary, if your parents didn't have any children, the odds are pretty good that you won't have any either.
