Got my latest TELUS phone bill and I'm being charged $3.08 for " LD Network Access ". My LD useage is very limited so I'm thinking of trying a new carrier. Called Shaw as they already provide my internet and cable. Price quoted was less than TELUS and I can keep my present number.

I justed wanted to ask anyone what their general experience has been with Shaw's phone service? As I mentioned since I make very few LD calls my phone bill should be straightforward. How is their dependability and reception ? During the recent power failures have their lines been down ?

Any info would be helpful
Thanx

I generally find that SHAW goes down within an hour of a power failure. Telus stays up for several days (last year we had a 4-day outage. Telus was going throughout). This is related to Telus having generators at most of their central offices, but Shaw requires powered line amps throughout the city (the Alpha box on the hydro pole).

Some people would not care about power failures (use cell phone back up). Others would (family at home).

Just one thing to consider.

Does Telus still charge the $3 network access if you sign up for another long distance provider? I use YAK. Have done so for about 3-years. No monthly charge. Just 3.5 cents a minute for however many I use.

I had Vonage for 3 years - WHAT A PIECE OF SHIT!!!!

The voice quality was brutal and every time I called them I was routed to an overseas call centre that had no clue on the structure of the English language (not that I'm a Rhodes scholar)

6 months ago I switched, one by one, my home, office and fax lines to Shaw

I am VERY happy with the line quality and customer service

Other than cell lines, Telus has been removed from my wallet and telus mobility is next the way they are treating me (a 15 year - $600 a month client)

thanks for the vent..... I feel better now:D :D :D :D

I have had Vonage for 2 years and have no complaints regarding quality or service.

I am paying $19.95 per month and that includes 300 minutes of talk time including long distance calls in North America, Voice Mail, & caller ID.

By my calculation I have saved in excess of $500. during that period compared to the costs of services from Telus.

My guess is that some of the service issues experienced by others may relate directly to the quality and bandwidth of their internet service provider.

Never had any problems with

phonecardstore.ca

A $5 phone card with no connection fee will get you 250 minutes of talk time within Canada. That's $.02 a minute! They have a bunch of other types of cards too if you call overseas or don't mind paying a connection fee (good for fewer, longer calls).

Within minutes of ordering, they send you a PIN via email, and you just call the local access number, punch in your pin and phone number. Easy. Not for everyone, but I prefer it since I can use the card from any phone.

Only problem I ever had was a freak coincidence. I hit the order button at the EXACT same time as another customer and their system sent both of us the same PIN. An email to their customer service line quickly resolved the issue.

Pay by credit card.

I have it, and love it. I only use a cell phone for when I am out. My total bill, all inclusive, *haha* is $165 a month.

I'm a big fan of Shaw...I use it for phone, internet & TV (including HD & Movie Channels) and all-in, it costs me $165.00 per month.

When I lived in Regina, I had Sasktel for phone, StarChoice for TV and Access Communications for Internet...all together, it was costing me close to $300.00/month for services.

I use Shaw as well and have no issues except for the fact that you cannot except Collect calls....
That is because it is not technically a land line, but a high quality VOIP

For those wondering what VOIP is "Voice over internet protocol"

If shaw is new to your area, there will be some glitches for the first little while.
There were tons I'd times I'd go to use my phone and there was no dial tone.
They were very good about compensating me.
I have phone, internet, digital cable all for a little over $150/month.
I like having the free long distance all my family are out west. I can talk for hours.
