I'm watching kink right now on showcase and there is this tranny in Winnipeg that has a petition going around and apparantly the mayor (something Martin) was the first guy to sing it...he also said once there were enough signatures he would be honored to pass it on to the house of commons...

Actually prostitution is legal in Canada - what isn't legal is "communicating for the purposes of", keeping a common bawdy house, living off the avails of" and such things like that - but the exchange of sex for money or money for sex. Dave-in-Pheonix on "sexwork.com" has a good discussion of the matter.

There is a Winnipeg NDP Member of Parliament named Pat Martin.

Ten years ago Toronto city council passed a motion asking the federal government to decriminalize prostitution.

As the writer of the Eye article points out, if this happened, it would result in city governments enacting their own set of useless and pointless regulations attempting to over-control the business. This is exactly what happened, at least in the first few years, in some Australian states and New Zealand.
