YIKES ! Ryan Smith to the Islanders ! It's a sad day for Edmontonians.

And it looks like Bertuzzi will be seeing playoff time in motor city. Maybe he'll end up playing against the nucks in post season !!

Oh My God, I'm not sure what Kevin Lowe is thinking, He trades his one number guy from a city that would pick the peanuts out of Ryans poo. If I was Kevin I won't show up for the retirement party tonight in Rexall. His name is mud and the fans here won't take this one sitting down. Ryan bleed the Oilers Colors, this day won't be forgotten any time soon.

I wish Ryan Smyth the best in the playoff this years as he might have a better chance making them now.

I'm shocked......how could they not move someone else and find the $$ for him.....he's the only guy that shows up every night.....there's talk that this could be a strategy to allow the Oil to free up space and sign him in the off season while getting 2 highly touted players and a first round pick:mad: I call bullshit on that one........he'll never be back and he'll sign for top dollar in a US market......wherever he goes I hope he wins a cup there he deserves it.....Kevin Lowe may want to phone in his speech at the Messier party tonight!!

He won't be back.

Let this be a reminder for all those wags who talk about how athletes are all money hungry prima donnas whose only loyalty is to their wallet. I think it's pretty clear in this case who made the detached bottom line decision.

They choose to retire Messier's number on the night of the trade deadline? Obviously they chose a date when Phoenix (Gretzky) was in town, but man what a blunder. Trading your current (and beloved) captain the day you retire a former captain. Way to ruin a celebration.

Your right as far as a C on his Jersey but trust me as "The Face of The Franchise" the heart and soul, teeth laying on the ice coming back and scoring a goal.......he was the captain......Jason Smith was window dressing!!

kevin lowe should be fired

I officially gave up on edmonton making the playoffs, with smyth and his possitive attitude ,and his never say die attitude i really thaught they could at least make the playoffs....hmmmmmmm not anymore. And what did we get ..nothing, this year is a week year for the draft as it is and one of the players in the trade (nillson),will probably not even make the nhl, these drafts are a crapshoot at best, and too just throw away your heart and soul of your team is pathetic. This isn't the first bonehead move by lowe, what did we get for pronger....lupul smid ...:confused..if hemsky is worth 6 million surely smyth is worth the 5.5 million he wanted. If lowe really belives he is doing the best for his hockey team maybe he should resign.Iam still in shock over this trade, it really isn't about money beacause edmonton made lots of coin in last years cup run.I wish smyth the best of luck and would like to see him get a cup with the islanders..As for the oilers start practicing your golf game you will need it in a couple months...as u won't be in the playoffs. And as for lowe i think you should be FIRED....ASAP.

Didn't see this one coming no matter what rumors were circulating. The two things I remember most about Smyth was the mullet and the two teeth on the ice, and yes he absolutely was the face of the franchise for so many years.

Now he's following in Messier's footsteps and plying his trade in the big apple. Good acquisition for the Isles and kudos to Garth Snow

On another topic: is it just me or am I getting sick of seeing a grown man (Messier) cry on tv?

What a difference a season makes. Last season K-Lowe looked like a genius and this year he's become the biggest goat in town--well maybe a close second to Pronger who's Not in town

The Oil were talking about getting 1 or 2 quality defensemen for too long and never even attempted to pull the trigger and now its too late. This coming offseason might be similar to what the Nucks had to go through prior to this season
