Got to agree with you Smackyo.

It's funny, but some (especially on the right) are calling him too emotional and such bullshit. No shit Sherlock, it's hard to watch your city die and rats eat bodies because Bush sat on his pampered, over-privledged, and downright delusional ass and crack joke on how he used to come to NOLA to drink his whiskey, snort coke, and perform date rapes (okay, I'm guessing on that last one, but let's be honest guys, we know the type, and he is definitely the type. Can you imagine how much blackmail that mother fucker has had to pay out to keep things quiet?)

That was Clinton's problem, he was too poor for most of his life to properly bribe "witnesses". Then again, as it turns out now, Clinton will be considered a much greater president than Bush, who, if he didn't throw away his legacy in Iraq, has sure as fuck done it now with this Katrina debacle. On the right they'll tell you that a dirt poor city and state are supposed to have everything they need to resecure a city of 1,500,000 people. And actually, they have adequate Guard numbers is La. to have controlled the chaos, but unfortunately, all the decent Reserves (combat infantry troops) and equipment happen to be in Iraq now. A popular misconception is that all army troops can fight, but that isn't true. The key Guard and Reserve members, the ones who have the fighting skills, comm equip., and transportation are gone, being bled white in a desert while their families starve to death in the heartland of America.

Most Americans, Gonzo is an exception, do not look to the federal government for everything. It is also not surprising that the lefties come out of the wood work after the fact yelling it 's George’s fault….it’s George’s fault. Sorry man I don’t buy your load of crap.

In my assessment George did make a mistake. On Thursday he decided the State government was not capable of carrying out their responsibilities and he took them over. He should have done that 1 or 2 days earlier. That delayed decision cost lives.

So let’s replay what should have happened.

As soon as it was known that a cat 5 storm was heading towards New Orleans, mandatory evacuation should have started. The Governor of LA should have declared marshal law, ordered busses to the city to evacuate those that could not get out by themselves. The hospitals should have been cleared and all critical patients transfer to another location in-land. Those who decided to go to the convention center and the superdome should have been forced into busses before the storm hit and moved in-land.

The N.O. police force should have been on full alter before the storm hit and reinforcements called in, before the storm hit.

Many many lives would have been saved had she only acted. Had that occurred there would be far fewer than the tens of thousand of victims to deal with.

Once the storm hit and we knew where the flash points were, FEMA (yes George’s agency) was too slow in reacting. There is no excuse all of the resources should have been staged out of harms way and deployed as soon as possible. The military should have been deployed to occupy the town immediately. New Orleans is well known for being a high crime area. There are many very violent people there and it should have been anticipated they would try to take advantage of the situation.

Had George done that he would have been declared a racist, because he anticipated that a town with a large black population would be violent, yet he did not react that way in a white town in Florida. In my opinion he should have risked the criticism that would come from the left and done it anyway.

I am responsible for my own safety. Had I been in N.O. I would have left the town as soon as the warning was given. I want my government to be reactive (not proactive). If I am in trouble then I want help and the people in N.O. should expect to receive the help they needed within hours.

So let me take a shot at the politically correct left. You are not critical of the looter (not those taking food and water). You are not critical of those who were shooting police, national guardsmen, and rescuers. You are not critical of those who raped women and young girls in the shelters. You are not critical of the ones who shoved the weak and the young out of the way so they could get on the bus first.

Why not?

In my opinion it is because they were mostly blacks and God knows a liberal can not be critical of an African-American….unless of course they have gone conservative.

Sorry Gonzo you are wrong ….there will be time for an unemotional assessment and there will be blame attached to George and rightfully so. But as usual the left has decided this is a good opportunity to blame George for everything.

what he should have done.

Declared the hurricane a " terror hurricane "
do a shock and awe on N.O
but instead of dumping depleted uranium and other nasty shit on the people of n.o, dump medicine, food and water!. Lot cheaper too!

declare martial law.

Any hoodlum willing to shoot at authority, is fair game.

Emergency crisis relief of this magnitude is the primary duty of the federal government (maybe even their reason for existing), under the command of the executive branch, the president being its head. Bush even had the idiocy to say "No one ever imagined the levees breaking." WRONG, you moron! Experts and government reports have warned of this for years. At least he admitted a failure of his presidency in this regard, a first ever on any front.

I'm proud to call myself a liberal, yet find it easy to revile blacks who are using the situation to commit awful crimes. As with any people, some will be heros doing selfless acts and others will become monsters. And I make no excuses for Afican-Americans who have created their own bad circumstances through masochistic actions such as smoking, substance abuse, not getting an education, and having the materialistic instant-gratification mentality of the have-nots.

But these are poor people who are suffering, not exactly the president's power base, so all this comes as no surprise that he laughs & doesn't give a shit. They don't have the means to charter a private jet out of there at every hurricane warning, unike his family's cronies. So please don't fault them for staying to stick it out.

It's official: the US is now a third world country. El Salvador & Sri Lanka have offered their "National Guard" for assistance.

Good for Mayor Nagin for describing events as they really are without apology.

Where the fuck have you been? Who the hell has NOT been criticising people looting electronics? Who in their right mind hasn't been critical of gangs raping women? Who isn't appalled by rescuers being shot at? What kind of blind right wing rhetoric even makes someone think that way? You accuse liberals of ignoring all of the above? Do you know the meanings of delusional, paranoid and irrational?

Umm, while it is true that local and state authorities should have emergency plans, and be able to react - when it comes to large, catastrophic events, is it not the federal government who is responsible for helping the aftermath?

Yeah, so are all the "lefties" in Louisiana - who almost unanimously supported GWB in the election about a year ago.

C'mon, LD, that's bullshit and you know it. I know you're pissed, but that doesn't mean you have to be stupid, too

Ray Nagin has shown himself lacking in the basic diplomatic skills to be a president. Bush doesn't have them either so I guess why not....

pretty sure he is more diplomatic then bush. when his city is falling apart and chaos is the rule of law and the people that are supposed to be doing something are not then what do you expect the man to do? call a civillized press confrence and politely ask for help?

Anyone notice all the NO school buses all up under water? Or, that the NO levee board owns a jet, a marina and a casino, but lousy levees? How about the genius that directed everyone to the dome but did not provide water, food, medical care, police protection. did not protect the hospitals, and did not ask his governor for help BEFORE Katrina struck? The fist pointing the finger has more fingers pointing at the pointer. Folks, the buck stops with the mayor and his people.

The federal emergency planning for this was privatized, and handed over to a big GOP campaign contributor. No wonder there was no effective federal presence.
