Hello to all the PERB members. I am new here, and have never visited Vancouver, but I have previously posted on the Montreal board. I know very little about the Vancouver area, and apologize if my questions are too basic. However, I have browsed the board and not really found answers. I have the opportunity to fly to Seattle for a long weekend. My idea is to drive a rental car to Vancouver and spend my time there. Is this a practical idea? Is there some other form of efficient transportation available from the seattle airport to Vancouver? How far is the seattle airport? Also, what part of the city should I stay? I would like to park the car once I'm there and set out on foot, cab, or public transport. I would like to stay in a moderately priced, sp friendly hotel, not far from other action such as bars, restaurants, strip clubs, etc. One way to put this is that I am looking for a trip similar to the great times I have had in Montreal. Is this possible? Thanks in advance to those willing to help.

Mapquest puts the distance from Seatac Airport to Vancouver BC at 152.79 miles taking 2 hrs 38 minutes. With our traffic unless late at night that is not even close to realistic.

Others will have to help you with the specifics up there. I am planning a visit myself as soon as I either dig my birth certificate out of storage or renew my passport. Good luck.

Seattle - Vancouver options.

There is airline service. Air Canada and various American Carriers.

There is rail service. Amtrack.

You could rent a car and drive.

No recommendations, just suggestions.

It is an international border, which many of us tend to forget, so you must have a passport, birth certificate or whatever. Don't count on crossing either way without strong ID and proof of citizenship.

You could also try Victoria, where your SP dollar often goes farther. No rail service, but there are regularly scheduled ships back and forth. There is airline service, both airport to airport, and harbour to harbour. Take the harbour to harbour floatplane or helicopter service, the Victoria airport is too far from downtown.

It's pretty much off season in both cities, so look for bargains amongst the hotels.

MS Map Point puts it at 3 hours from The Airport Park to the PNE in Vancouver (250 kliks) Maybe do the run at night so you minimize time in the car.

Plenty of middle priced rooms to be found in vancouver. Around $50-$100/night.

Welcome to Vancouver

Here's a brief listing of restaurants in the downtown area.

Restaurant Links

For hotels you might want to try:

Sheraton Wall Center

or

Coast Hotel

These hotels will put you right in the heart of downtown Vancouver, with many restaurants within easy walking distance. There's also an abundance of bars around, simply walk up Robson or depending on the types of bars/clubs you're looking for Granville.

Trip to Vancouver!

If you are flying to Seattle and are too tired for the drive up I suggest taking the "Quick Shuttle" from Seatac Airport. It boards right outside the domestic terminal at Seatac Airport and has really reasonable rates. I believe a one way to Vancouver is 40 US and a round trip is around 70 US. I believe if you are a student, senior or in the military, you get an additional discount. They seem to have a pretty good schedule and run quite often. They make stops at some of the major hotels in Richmond and downtown Vancouver. It is really convenient straight from the airport to your hotel in downtown Vancouver. It also has wonderful scenery and you can just sit back and relax. Don't forget your passport, and picture id.
Have fun and play safe in Vancouver.
