I have talked to other SP's & heard them talk about seeing their clients in the "real world" I had never seen a client, in the "real world" until this week. I just smiled at him and gave him a small nod. I did not know the business that I was at, was his.

My question to everyone is, was that the "correct" way to have handled the situation?

Okay, he did help me carry my purchases outside. ;)

Sounds like you handled the situation in a very professional manner. You aknowledged him without giving away anything to potential observers. I don't think any client would expect more in this type of situation.

I would say you handled that correctly. It would probably be rude to ignore him & pretend you don't recognize. On the other hand, his s.o. could be present & he would definitely not want to be answering the "who's she?" question later. It goes both ways - I would not want a client coming up to me in public & asking "how's business - sure had a great time last night." Who knows who I'm with, right? Maybe mom. Maybe someone from my day job. I think a smile & a nod is about right most of the time.

The one time I've bumped into a client in public, I happened to be alone, but I had just popped a snack into my mouth, so couldn't say hi. I just smiled & waved & kept walking, as he was making motions to come over & get real friendly.
