You have got to be kidding me. 30 years later they cower to one person's complaint. Sure it's not an acceptable term. On the heals of the uproar in the US over the Mark Twain book, it looks like 1984 has finally arrive with big brother controlling who does what. and as usual not catering to the masses but special interest groups or squeaky wheels. I agree none of the words in question are acceptable in todays society but come on already.

From Yahoo.com

OTTAWA - The 1980s song "Money for Nothing" by the British rock band Dire Straits has been deemed unacceptable for play on Canadian radio.

In a ruling released Wednesday, the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council says the song contravenes the human rights clauses of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters' Code of Ethics and Equitable Portrayal Code.

A listener to radio station CHOZ-FM in St. John's, N.L., complained last year that the song includes the word "faggot" in its lyrics and is discriminatory to gays.

The broadcaster argued that the song had been played countless times since its release decades ago and has won music industry awards.

A CBSC panel concluded that the word "faggot," even if once acceptable, has evolved to become unacceptable in most circumstances.

The panel noted that "Money for Nothing" would be acceptable for broadcast if suitably edited.

What I think is lost on this person and the gay community is that the lyrics are written from the point of view of a blue collar worker circa 1985. He is wondering why he has to work so hard for his meager pay while this kid, who hasn't had to work a day in his life, gets to live the jet set. If they looked at the context in which it was written, they probably wouldn't have a problem with it.

What troubles me about this is that apparently there was only a single complaint that prompted the action. However to be fair, the song has not been banned outright, but rather the offensive word in question must be edited out for radio play, which is not uncommon with many songs heard on the radio.

Apparently none of the CRTC nor the complainants have ever read any Shakespeare either. Plenty of slanderous terms for "faggot" etc in Sir William's prose. Mind you, he did write it in a humorous way while Mark Knopfler was merely quoting some appliance installers.

Be nice to see some sort of FM radio revolt over this one and play the song with all words intact and thumb their noses at these PC idiots.

Can't say that I'm a fan of the song (although the lyrics have merit), but this level of censorship is kind of BS. It's funny, the same people that like to trample over the freedom of speech of others (in this case, songs & artists, & this isn't even offensive) forget that their ability to speak out would not exist without freedom of speech...

As Stark once said, "I'm sorry everyone has become a bunch of pussies"
