Marriage Proposal? Anybody else get these too?

So as many of you know, I am a member of a dating site. I don't take it too seriously. In fact, I am not a paid member so I cannot even email out. However, others can email me. Anyways, in the last month or so, I've gotten 3 emails from russian girls with pics. They range in looks from 7.0 to 8.5 accordings to MARS. This 1 particular girl has written me 8 times, and her 8th email is below and it's freaking me out! I made it clear to her I am in Canada, and she is in Russia and that I could probably come visit her one day as a friend, but could not guarantee anything beyond that. In this email, she is more or less telling me she wants to marry me... I haven't responded yet, but I'm just like whoah... let's slow RIGHT THE HECK DOWN here.... we haven't even met yet!

Is anybody else getting these emails from women in Russian? The email addresses all end in a .RU and I do not think it is some guy pretending to be a girl. I don't think somebody would go through the trouble with faking that bad English so consistently in 8 consecutive emails, nor come up with 4-5 different pics in different settings of the same person.

I've also gotten similar emails from 2 other women, but they haven't been as agressive as this particular girl.

So let me know what you guys think. Is this a trend that Russian women are trying to find North American husbands through dating sites?

Yeah, I remember a story in the Toronto Star back when I lived in Hogtown, with a big splashy pic of the smiling groom and stunning bride, who happened to be employed as a stripper at the time in a peeler bar in the GTA.

Well, this is one possibility, Mav. Alexandria has struck upon the other. This girl may just be desperate to get out of Russia because of the oppressive poverty she is living under. Many people in the world see North America as the land of milk and honey. By the standards of their own nation, all Americans and Canadians are rich.

I am not saying that you have misled this girl, as Alexandria suggests. I am suggesting that she may be reading far too much into everything that you've written her. She may be seeing you as her one chance to get out of the poverty of Russia and live in the lap of luxury.

I think the advice to be careful should be seriously considered. Personally, I would stop writing to this girl. And I mean completely stop. Not even a final email to explain things. Stop writing her. That might seem cold, but in the long run, you are actually doing her a favour by not keeping her hopes up that you are her ticket out.

Honestly, I think Ilovethemail might have the real answer for you. It is certainly the scariest possibility. If what he is suggesting is true, run away from this as fast as you can. Either way, ending communication seems like the reasonable course of action.

Ummm no offense there Alexandria, but you haven't got a clue how these people work, if you want to know the long story about how I do, I'll tell ya sometime. Bottom line, is it a girl over there? Yes. Is she being controlled by a vodka swizzler? Definitely. Is mav screwed if he let's her over here?....at BEST, she will come over and live/work with him long enough to be eligible to stay in Canada - then she bails and either works as a pro here and sends money back to Vlad the Impaler, or bugs out to the U.S. and does the same. Are they all scams, no, probably not - but only 1 or 2 people a week win the lottery, the rest don't do nearly as well. All I am saying is this - if Mav proceeds with this, then he better have his eyes wide open, because the downside on this one is huge.

As is noted in another post 8 emails is not a proposal and if the girl really is a sweetie and trying to get the hell out of Vladivistok or where ever, then that is unfortunate. If he is really keen, then fly her over here as a tourist, meet her and make a decision but - EYES WIDE OPEN, cuz if it goes bad, he will be bent over with no lubrication.

Every single mail order bride thing I have heard of invariably involves the bride dumping the guy as soon as she gets her papers. You are dealing with women from poor countries who are desperate. If leading some first world sap down the garden path is what it takes to get a better life, most will do it.

My understanding is that if you sponsor these people, you can be financially responsible for them, so if they move out and end up on welfare, you get the bill. The stories of these sorts of arrangements actually working out are pretty rare, and on par with stories of the Easter Bunny.
