I just think taking a punch for any reason is not smart . muddle it with any honor mumble jumbo you want, its still a punch in the mouth. Maybe the bully could have been a black belt in kung foo and one KO him. Black belts get KO all the time so don't think they make a practice of getting hit first. My martial arts instructor had a pretty simple explanation - it is not about hitting first - it is about hitting last. Why would the bully want to learn something passed on by Asians? He is after all - a racist. Martial arts is predicated on self-defense - not red neck let's pick on an Asian without knowing he can whip my ass stupidity.
The kid just wanted a reason to fight back and taking one punch was no big deal to him since he probably has lots of practice/experience. If he really wanted to - he could have done a lot more damage (like using the right hand).

How's the kid a bully and a racist for starting one fight....? Why can't people see this for what it is, a kid in school got into a fight with another kid. Said kid will watch his mouth next time or learn to fight better..end of story.

For those ignorant ones who like to shoot first and ask questions later - here is the readers digest version. Billy-Bob aka White Kid (in a 90% white school district that had a history of racial attacks) picked a fight and antagonized/shoved Bruce Lee aka Asian kid without knowing that Lee has a black belt. Bruce Lee is not permitted to initiate fight due to HONOR and code of conduct that comes with being a black belt which is for self-defense. Instead of uttering a generic insult - Billy Bob uses a racial insult, shoves the kid and eventually throws the FIRST punch. Billy Bob gets his nose broken. Bruce Lee gets in bigger trouble even though he acted in self-defence and restraint (he used the weaker left hand).
Both get suspended but Bruce Lee is charged with assault and gets longer suspension since Billy Bob is a coward who did not admit the truth about being a racist and initiating the fight. The pussies running the school and the school board were trying to cover their backs without bothering to learn all the details and as such - 400 kids stage a protest and walk-out of school.
If it were not for the other kids - none of us would have known about this. Fights happen all the time and all Billy Bob had to do was to tell the truth and none of this would have been a big deal.
