Little bitch got what he deserved. Don't start what you can't finish! I remember our, "Tough guy" in junior high tripped this little Asian kid, the kid spun around and punched him, TOTALLY shattering his cheek and orbital bone. No sympathy for the devil here

It's funny because the asian family are Korean, lol.

If you're gonna make a racial slur, at least you have with right ethnicity correct first!

God damn it. The victim of bullying defends himself (after being called a racial slur and hit in the mouth), and of course it's the victim who gets suspended, arrested, and potentially expelled, while fuck-all gets done about the racist bully. What the fuck is wrong with this country? At least his fellow students are smarter than the authorities and are supporting him.

yes, this is a sad commentary

about the mind set of some people in this country. Luckily the townsfolk have some common sense and the boy defending himself is brave enough to stick with it.

This gives the law enforcement in Keswick a "black eye" that may wake some people up. Hopefully justice will prevail.

Idiot got what he deserved. Actually less.

I got to admit coming from Calgary, racism is alive and well in Canada. Can't count how many times I've heard racial slurs and seen bullying back in high school, outside of school and even at home. Sadly sometimes even I would join in. Looking back it makes me sick and ashamed to be white.

Probably the only thing I admire about Toronto and Vancouver, racial tolerance. Well, more than most of the world.

When I worked at a large global firm in Toronto, I recall at executive and manager retreat gathering in Muskoka and overheard one fellow saying "Man it's great to get away from all those immigrants in the city and all the strange smelly shit they eat"

Racism is alive and well in Canada but less in your face than say in the USA.

Really? Go to surrey where white supremacists are alive and well. Come out to the suburbs and see how people talk about the Mexicans and Indo-Canadians working on the cranberry and blueberry farms. Racism has not passed our corner of the world :(

They all look the same! ;)
Everybody who belongs to a specific racial category will look like another person of the same racial category.

I can't tell the difference between someone who is French from someone who is Bulgarian, or a Swede from a Dane. The same goes for a Japanese and a Chinese.

'I'm not going to give up,' suspended student's father vows

If heads don't roll, will you be suprised? Institionalized bigotry in a small hick town.

Racism issue looms as school board tries to clarify actions against teen who used tae kwon do in apparent self-defence

From Saturday's Globe and Mail

KESWICK, ONT. — The 15-year-old Korean boy sat quietly in the car Friday morning as his classmates streamed past the window, waving and saying hello.

The students were making their way to school in this small Ontario town, but the boy was travelling in the opposite direction. He was going to his first day at a program for suspended students.

As he watched the scene unfold, the 15-year-old's father was heartbroken. “It was really sad. He just wanted to go to school,” he said.

The boy later said there was little discipline or teaching and no prospect of academic advancement at the alternate school.

While the other students were learning, he said he spent the day playing table tennis.

The 15-year-old was suspended for four weeks from Keswick High School over a fight that he says began when another student racially abused him and punched him in the mouth. The boy, who has a black belt in tae kwon do, fought back with a single punch that broke his antagonist's nose.

He was initially the only person investigated, and police charged him with assault causing bodily harm. But 400 of his fellow students walked out of class this week to denounce the racist bullying that preceded the punch, and the outcry reached newspaper front pages. In response, York police reopened the case, and assigned a special investigator to probe whether a hate crime was committed.

The 15-year-old's parents are hoping the charges against him will be dropped.

But the ordeal is far from over.

Earlier this week, the boy's father received a couriered letter from the York Region District School Board. It said the school's principal, Catherine McGinley, was recommending the discipline committee mete out the harshest possible punishment when it meets on May 13. She asked that the 15-year-old be expelled not just from Keswick High, but from all schools in York region.

“It was horrible. It was a big shock,” the boy's father said.

On Friday afternoon, spokesman Ross Virgo said the board meant to retract that letter, that it was sent in error and that its contents were no longer valid. He said the case is being investigated further, and that the recommendation of expulsion is no longer in effect.

But no one had told the boy's family, who were still mulling over the letter's devastating implications late Friday.

They said that they feel as though some combination of forces is trying to run them out of this rural, mostly white town, particularly in light of attacks on Asian fishermen in the nearby Lake Simcoe area in 2007.

On Thursday, though, local Mayor Robert Grossi visited the family to assure them that they were welcome in Keswick. The mayor recognized the 15-year-old, who is a top student with a 90 average, as one of the leaders of a youth forum he had convened.

“I told them I was sorry about the incident and I wanted to make sure they that they understood they're not only welcome in this community, but they are already part of this community,” Mr. Grossi said.

On Monday, the boy will return to the program for suspended students. He is serving a maximum length suspension of 20 days, which he cannot appeal, for “committing physical assault on another person that causes bodily harm requiring treatment by a medical practitioner,” according to a school document provided to his parents. The school called the incident “a consensual fight with another student.”

His opponent sought treatment for a deviated septum, fracture and concussion. The 15-year-old said he regrets throwing the punch, but felt he had no choice after the other boy called him a “fucking Chinese” and punched him in the face, cutting his mouth.

His father said the school doesn't seem to understand the impact of the racial comment. Afterward, a vice-principal asked his son why a Korean was upset about being called Chinese.

“Probably they don't realize how much it hurts when someone makes a racist comment,” his father said. “My son said, ‘I felt all the way down, like I am nothing, on the floor. Like they're the master and I'm the slave.'“ His father said he will continue to fight for his son.

“Maybe they're trying to force me to move to another area, I don't know … I'm not going to give up. If I give up, no other Asian can ever come here and feel safe.”

Hate-crime investigator digs deeper into bullying brawl

JOE FRIESEN

From Friday's Globe and Mail
Can someone with leadership put an end to this bull shit circus of inaction by the school administration which has looked the other way and hoping no one will notice?

April 30, 2009 at 10:39 PM EDT

A hate-crime investigator continues to probe the fight that led to the suspension of a 15-year-old Korean student at a high school in Keswick, Ont.

The youth began his first day at a special centre for suspended students Thursday, still unsure whether the boy he says racially abused and then punched him will face charges.

A spokeswoman for York Regional Police said no further charges have been laid, but police continue to conduct interviews.

“There is a hate crime investigator assigned to look into whether it is a hate crime or hate motivated in some way,” Sergeant Laurie Perks said Thursday.

The 15-year-old was suspended for 20 days and will not be able to attend regular classes at Keswick High School. He is also charged with assault causing bodily harm, and will have to attend a local police station next week to be processed and fingerprinted, his father said.

The charge stems from a fight in gym class on April 21. The 15-year-old, who came with his parents to Canada from Korea in 2004, says he got into a dispute with a white classmate. The white student addressed him with a racial slur, calling him “a fucking Chinese,” and when confronted he refused to apologize.

The white student threw the first punch, hitting the 15-year-old in the mouth. The 15-year-old, a black belt in tae kwon do, threw a left-handed jab that broke the white student's nose. The 15-year-old was the only one charged, which led to an outcry from the students at his school.

More than 400 walked out of class Monday morning to protest, carrying signs and wearing black clothing as a sign of solidarity.

The 15-year-old's mother said it doesn't seem fair that only her son would be charged when he acted in self-defence. She said the racial slur, which was echoed a day later by an older cousin of the boy whose nose was broken, is deeply concerning to her and her husband.

She spoke to the school's vice-principal about creating a special anti-racism curriculum, but was told that it wasn't necessary because it's taught in geography classes. She disagrees, citing the 2007 incidents of Asian fisherman being assaulted and harassed in the Lake Simcoe area close to Keswick.

“This isn't just kids fighting. The core of this is racism. That's why I keep saying to the vice-principal, ‘What are you doing to educate these children?' ” she said.

But she feels the school's administration is dismissing her concerns. She suggested a public apology by her son's attacker would be a good start, but hasn't heard whether it will happen.

“We're just Asian parents going to the school asking something in broken English,” she said.

The boy's father said he hopes the media attention doesn't place too much pressure on everyone involved. He doesn't want this incident preceding his son into every classroom, colouring every teacher's perception of his character. But he said he can't concede without a fight.
