i have the amd 64 chip in my comp and tried to download the new windows xp-64 and it turns out it needs 1024 mb of ram which i don't have (got 512).

then find out that Linux has version specifically for AMD64 (kernel 2.6.6?) but it was hell and high water until 3:00 a.m. trying to find a copy to download.

and still no joy!

mandrake 10.1 plus can be purchased but i cannot find the putative 'freeware' copy anywhere to download ... at the same time, i have come across copies for $10 for the dvd version while mandrake wants $149.

i even tried reading my way through the mandrake support and complaint board and no joy there either.

anyone else got some ideas?

which linux for amd64 and link to the exact spot where it will download? and even better, a version that can reside on cd?

helphelphelphelphelp etc.

:)

Did you try linuxiso.org ??

FreeBSD (not Linux more UNIX) and Gentoo both support AMD64 processors. Not really a Linux man myself but I can think of those two off the top of my head.

PS: Are you sure win64 need a gig of ram to run?!?!?!?

From their product page for 10.1: http://www.mandrakesoft.com/products/101/x86-64
Mandrakelinux 10.1 for x86-64 combines the strengths of the 10.1 distribution with the latest technology from x86-64 processors. It is based on PowerPack 10.1 and significantly improves the performance of its applications. X86-64 technology doubles the number and size of processor registers, as well as the size of memory one can use. Furthermore, Mandrakelinux 10.1 for x86-64 provides perfect compatibility with 32-bit applications. This is the ultimate product for power users who demand the highest performance!

I assumed x86-64 to include AMD64. Guess we will find out if LonelyGhost gets it to work on his machine.

LG, you mention kernel 2.6.6: from the hardware compatibility page on the Mandrakelinux site --- the only 2 “compatible (CERTIFIED)” results for Mandrakelinux 10.1 X86-64 are:

-[Chipsets] AMD 8111 AC97 (2.6.8. 1-20mdk kernel)
-[Chipsets] AMD 8131 (2.6.8. 1-20mdk kernel)

… with a standard covering caveat:

LEGAL DISCLAIMER: The Mandrakelinux Supported Hardware database contains information about hardware devices that have been tested and/or have been reported to function properly with Mandrakelinux. Due to the wide variety of system configurations, MandrakeSoft cannot guarantee that a specific device will work properly on your system.

If you get it to work... make sure you notify Mandrakelinux so they can update their website for compatible chipsets :D
