Legality and social acceptablity of prostitution

My thoughts on this were brought up by the Escorts vs Street Walkers thread, but they're actually a separate topic, so here they are.

Drugs, of the recreational sort, are illegal in the US and Canada. If they were totally legalized, who would be most hurt by this decision? Well, you could point to extra people becoming addicted to drugs, but the group I'd say would be most hurt, and which doesn't even occur to most people, would be the drug dealers.

There are large networks of people who are involved in the manufacturing and distribution of drugs, all of whom are taking lots of risk and making lots of money. Legalize drugs, and everyone starts buying from respectable legal outlets, and the drug dealers are all out of a job. Or they go get a job at BongHits 'R Us making $9.50 an hour.

Recreational drugs and prostitution have in common the fact that they're both black market activities. And as is common to all black market products, their prices are many times higher than they would be if they were legal.

I think it's safe to say that if you asked SP's of any sort about the biggest problems they have with their jobs, near or on the top of their lists would be the illegality of what they do, and the social unacceptability of it. Getting arrested, having to risk arrest, having to play all sorts of games to avoid risking arrest, having to hide what you do from family and friends, etc. Then there's the fact that a "whore" is our society's worst insult for a woman, and now that's what you are, so you have to deal with that stigma, both from others and from yourself.

So SP's wish that they didn't have to hide from the law, hide what they do from others, etc etc, they wish that what they did was legal, and they wish it was socially acceptable.

But guess what? As an SP, your whole lifestyle is dependent upon both the illegality and social unacceptability of what you do. If prostitution were totally legal in every way, if it were totally socially acceptable in every way, as acceptable as giving massages is today, say, then your average SP would be making the same amount of money that the average person makes.

In the US, the median hourly wage is about $17, though that generally includes benefits. But your average escort in the US is making $200 an hour or so, which means she can work 10 hours a week and make $100,000 a year.

She makes this enormously high wage because she is breaking the law, taking certain risks, and dealing with the stigma of being a prostitute. You might assume she also makes this enormous wage due to her great beauty or sexual skills, but you'd be wrong. I've seen websites for escorts who are unbelievably unattractive, who look like Roseanne Barr, if you injected 100 pounds more of fat into her and then beat in her face with a board. And they're getting work. They merely have to lower their price to a bit less than the typical escort's.

If prostitution were totally legal, totally socially acceptable in every way, as acceptable as giving massages for a living, then your average SP would be making $20 an hour in the US, and whatever the equivalent average wage is in canada.

So no more making thousands of dollars a week, working part time.

So which would you prefer, as an escort? Making $200 an hour, but having to deal with a bunch of risks and negativity in a variety of ways? Or making $20 an hour, working 40 hours a week just like any other job?

If you want to truly protect your income, as an escort, I recommend the following:

1. Attempt to persuade everyone in society, through advertising and any other means posssible, that sex is generally dirty, bad, and should only be done by married couples attempting to procreate, and even then they should feel guilty about it. (catholic church's position!)

2. Do everything possible to keep prostitution illegal. Stress to your local politicians the need to keep your community clean and wholesome.

3. Encourage and strengthen the stigma of being a "whore". Teach women that anytime they have or enjoy sex, they are a dirty terrible person, and teach men to look down on women who perform sex in any other way except as a marital duty.

4. Take a strong anti-feminist position, and actively fight feminism wherever it appears. Feminists will attempt to preach that women's sexuality is a good and natural thing, which will totally interfere with what you're trying to do in steps 1-3. In addition, if women in the general population are having and enjoying sex, your client base might shrink.

5. Encourage lots of fundamentalist christians to move into your community. They'll do steps 1-4 for you, with great enthusiasm.

As long as you are successful at these steps, you'll keep the supply of prostitutes far lower than the male demand for them, and you'll keep your prices wonderfully high.

Alright, now in case the irony of the above few paragraphs didn't come through, I'll let you know I wasn't serious about them. But I do have a perhaps serious point about all this. If I were an escort, and one who had the same depth, views on politics, spirituality, feminism, etc, that I have now, the overall position I'd find myself in would do some weird things to my mind :)

I like the bit about drug dealers being hurt the most, if drugs were legal. One lower-mainland greenhouse would put every illegal grow-op out of business in two months. If people dealing in illegal goods and services were good businessmen, they would be making a living legally. but they aren't, therefore they deal in illegal businesses where there is less competiition.

The people most opposed to legallizing the many vices that citizens of USA and Canada routinely partake are those who make a living combatting these same vices. Police and Priests/Ministers/Rabbis/Mullahs/etc

Actually, prostitution is legal in Canada, but almost every activity involved with it isn't, soliciting, bawdy houses, living off the avails etc. Also, I doubt prostituion will ever become acceptable to society as long as society cosists of 50% plus women who have a vested interest in limiting the availability of sex for their partner. As long as men continue to have greater potential to accumulate wealth, women will try to become the sole supplier of sex to their chosen mate in order to share in that wealth. If sex was conviently available from the house on the corner, she would have to compete in order to keep her mates resources available to her (ie she might have to swallow) There are no easy answers, and I'm not saying it's a conspiracy, it's just the way things are.

4. Take a strong anti-feminist position.....

The line I seem to hear from the feminists is that prostitution is tantamount to exploitation of women .....

on the other hand....

The problem with the original argument made is exemplified by SPs in the State of Nevada, where prostitution is legal. Despite the legality, SPs aren't any cheaper than here (in fact, more expensive when one considers the exchange rate), whether you go to one of the "ranches" or pick one up in the casino....

Prostitution and Drugs are Very Similar

Legalize them and dealers and pimps will fade away. Is that so awful?

Nevada = bad example. In European countries like Germany, cost is MUCH lower than in North America.

If you legalized prostitution, stables would disappear as "promoters" would find that their "workers" would lose all of the incentives of having such an arrangement. Independent escorts would probably do just fine but the cost of the service would likely fall as the stigma of the illegality (real or perceived) diminished.

Willie, I see your point, but when you look into it further it is not valid.

Nevada brothels are just about the most expensive in the world. This is because they are a tiny island of legality in an sea of illegality. The US in general has the world's highest priced prostitution because the US is one of the only places in the world, other than the fundamentalist muslim countries, where it is totally illegal everywhere.

Except a few places in Nevada. Because they are the >only< legal places in the US, they have no competition, for those who want to stay legal and who don't want to travel thousands of miles to leave the country. Thus, they can and do charge enormous amounts.

"No competition" is basically wrong, though. They DO have competition. They are competing with escorts, but they offer a better service than escorts in a certain sense, due to the fact that they're legal. Their rates are basically determined by the rates of escorts in the rest of the US. If the average escort in the US charges $200 per hour, then the nevada brothels can easily get away with charging more, and they do. People will definitely pay extra to have the whole experience be above board and legal.

And, my understanding is that the counties where prostitution is legal limit the number of brothels, which keeps competition from driving the price down, as well.

By the way, prostitution in Nevada is only legal in certain counties, and only in brothels. Those who hang around the casinos looking for customers are breaking the law.

.....tell the truth, if sex with a woman wasnt part of the equation, how much would you really have to do with them?
A few jokes you might enjoy......

WHY DO WOMEN HAVE TITS?
So men will talk to them.
WHY DO WOMEN WEAR MAKE UP & PERFUME?
Because they're ugly and they smell.
WHY DO MEN DIE BEFORE THEIR WIVES?
They want to.

And one for both of you....

WHY DID GOD CREATE LESBIANS?
So feminists couldn't breed.

This guy walks into a sperm bank with a mask covering his face, and walks up the lady, shows her a gun and tells her to go open the vault. She says, "but sir, this is not a real bank, it's a sperm bank." He demands she opens the vault, and she does. He then demands that she drinks 2 vials of sperm. She says, "there aint no way i'm drinking that." So he shows her the gun again. She decides to drink the sperm, and right after she does the man takes off his mask and it's her husband and he says "see, I told you it wouldn't kill ya."....

A husband and wife were having dinner at a very fine restaurant when this absolutely stunning-drop-dead gorgeous young woman comes over to their table, gives the husband a big kiss, tells him she'll see him later, and walks away.
His wife glares at him and says, "Who was that??!!"
"Oh," replies the husband, "that was my mistress."
The wife says, "That's it; I want a divorce."
"I understand," replies her husband, "but, remember, if you get a divorce, there will be no more shopping trips to Paris, no wintering in the Caribbean, no Lexus in the garage, and no more country club. But the decision is yours."
Just then the wife notices a mutual friend entering the restaurant with a very beautiful woman. "Who's that woman with Jim?" she asks. "That's his mistress," replies her husband.
"Ours is prettier," says the wife.

Okay, I'm done.

Do you travel? If you did, you would NOT make such a statement unless you had a momentary lapse of reason (not the Pink Floyd type). The average take home disposal income in Germany, for example, is WAY higher than in Canada. In Denmark, same. The cost of pooning as a percentage of income is a LOT lower in many, if not most (save Britain) European countries.:)
