Toshiba makes some great laptops. But if you want both functionality and sex appeal then go with a MacBook. It will cost you more $1300 Plus Applecare, but you'll get the best of both worlds.

Try www.vancouverlaptop.com, or MDG. THe last promo they had you got a free PS3 with your purchase.

Laptops are getting so cheap nowadays and come fully loaded with all the extras. You can get a kick ass laptop for one grand or less now. Check out Futureshop - they have pretty decent deals.

Refurbished laptop from future shop

I recently bought this refurbished HP laptop from futureshop. LOVE IT. Set me back $800 after tax and it's super fast. One drawback is that a screw cover is missing on the top corner. But other than this tiny flaw, the machine runs perfectly. Intel Core 2 duo T5000 and 2GB of Ram. Can't go wrong.

I got a Dell Inspiron 1501 about 2 months back for about $550, it's a pretty decent machine for that price. AMD Turion X2, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB Hard Drive, 15.4" LCD, wireless built-in. Not a bad deal.

The dell 1500 series with AMD processors are a great buy. I would not recommend a reconditioned laptop unless you're paying less than $500. There are new ones with good warranty for that price so i personally don't see any logic to buying reconditioned.

Reconditioned quite often means you're dealing with a 3rd party on the warranty or the warranty is reduced. I'm not a big fan of electronic warranties in general, but they do make sense on something like a laptop.

I bought a Acer back in Jan .. been happy with it .. at the time about the cheapest . now youy can get more for less.. around $ 650 or so .. Mine was $ 889 plus exstendied warrenty and upgrade the ant virus.. and tax.. cam to $1500.. not what i wanted to pay . but put on the pay a year from now plan..
The thing with all this stuff .. the minut you buy it .there is something better next week . and cheaper..
I love my lap top .. ( never thought i would get one ).. Just all this power in a little space.. and i can take it with me.
It may not be the top of the line .. but I maybe use one tenth of what it is capable of .. and that is the case with most people.. Just think the computing power.. that we have in the palm of our had today.. Twenty five years ago .(1981) was a called a main frame. was the the size of a frig.. or two.. and coat $500,000.00
So to all the computer geniuses.. it usual is the software that causes the trouble... still .

I bought a cheapo gateway laptop about 2 years ago and I couldn't believe how much they had gone down in price (with tax it was $800). I made sure I got one with pre-made backup disks (not that I've needed to use them).

I recently quadrupled the memory to 1GB and it made a big difference in performance. I'd recommend getting as much memory as you can afford and maybe not get the fastest processor. I'm finding that for basic web browsing with Firefox I"m using about 400MB typically for both the OS and FF memory requirements.

I also don't recommend getting something that is too old. You won't get good value and you may have problems using more modern software on it. Although if you tend to use open source applications they usually make an effort to make their software work with older equipment.

depending on where you are, go to London Drugs ... they are usually
reasonably helpful and have a 15 day 'no questions asked' return
policy ...

stay away from the acer crap ... and dell ... both have been
problems for lots of people ...

most of the 'brand name' ones are fine ...

Couple things though ... if you have to carry it, weight does
become an issue ...

If you have to run on the battery, figure out which one works
the longest or has reasonable second batteries available.
