In some jurisdictions (Not Canada, but Canadians can buy lottery tickets in those jurisdictions), lottery winners can be anonymous.

If you won the lottery and could be anonymous, would you be anonymous?

I’d vamoose to a beach somewhere and figure out my next moves. It’s been a while with this pandemic that a good holiday is long overdue.

Once I’m home again the first stop would be at a lawyer’s office for legal and tax planning.

Then on to see my broker and I’d get him to set up an annuity to pay out $X over a number of years. From what I’ve read most large lottery winners blow through their winnings in 5 years or less

Given the large prizes they’ve had this year, security for yourself and family is a must. There was a $27M lotto winner in Montreal who was kidnapped and threatened with murder in 2007.

And I wouldn’t tell a soul. The more people who are knowledgeable, the more chance of problems.

This would be my number one concern if I won a shitload of money. I would keep a low profile and resist the urge to flaunt my wealth.

In 1980, I knew a carpenter, who made great money, who won 1 million dollars. In that time, in small city sask, that would set you up for life. Within 5 yrs, after too many parties he put on, too much free booze provided for his "friends", the money was gone.

I would move to a place where nobody knows me, far away from the dilemma whom to tell and whom not to tell. Give myself time to cool off and think. With time things would sort out themselves much easier.

Yeah, here in BC, you have to agree to be in the promotional ads and shit before you can get your money. I like the one lotto winner who showed up in a Darth Vader mask and costume to hide their identity.

I would wear a hat, sunglasses and a mask and do everything I can to ensure as few people as possible know I won. No way I want to get buried with the scam artists, poor/distant relatives and other idiots who would come out of the woodwork looking for a handout or a cut of the win.
They still give out your legal name

I've actually thought about this (which is odd as I don't buy lottery tickets)... I would hire a proxy to claim the ticket. Get a contract done up by a lawyer, the proxy gets 10% (maybe it's the lawyer) and then transfers me the rest of the money.

I'm sure the lottery corp wouldn't like it if they knew, and maybe they have protocols in place to stop that from happening. I think having it anonymous is a much better idea.

If I was the proxy I would jump on the first plane out of the country as soon as I got the money. ✈💰

On the Playnow website they show pics of the winner but only first name and Initial of the surname.

Apparently you have the option of not talking with the media. I think a wise person would be taking this option. A pic with no story might not even get published.

You have your pic taken with big cheque and that’s it.
