Yes there really is a Timbuktu. It was once the southern terminous of the Trans Sahara slave trade operated by the Arabs although it was already in decline by the first time a European actually saw it.

You can get to it from Morocco, the camel trip leaves from Zagora and takes 150 days to reach Timbuktu, which is probably why it was considered the end of the world by Europeans for awhile. I didn't know it was in Mali.
