Does anyone know where I can find a great divorce lawyer?? I need someone who is as sharp as a gillette mach 3, who will slice up my ex into pieces. I am not quite that revengefull, it's more like I know my ex is going to go for everything she can get her hands on.

Any help would be appreciated as I have no idea where to start looking or what to expect, just that this whole thing just sucks!!!

Oh well, now I can enjoy this hobby guilt free, as long as I have a couple of dollars left over....

If you dont tell him where you got the info...Dinyar Marzban, (hes at Nelson and Howe) he has the ability to cut through all the other lawyers bullshit when they go on fishing expeditions to rack up their fees and then yours too. Calm cool and surgical in his vocabulary.

If I was a lawyer, although my sister is one, I would want to be like Mr. Marzban (prounced mars-ban)

You only need to hire an expensive lawyer, IF there is "a lot of money or a large estate involved", or there are complicated child support or alimony issues. Otherwise save your pennies. Most "family law" attorneys charge scheduled fees as dictated by the Law Society, so there will be little difference in cost, if any between an inexperienced or middle of the road attorney. The key of couse is experience. Many lawyers will take a stab at Family Law, but many are out of their depth when the going gets tough, and are likely to enlist the help of an experienced firm to help them through it should that occur. Of course, a downtown reputable firm will charge a hefty premium for that 20th Floor office, but they will tend to be more pushy, and require a larger retainer. A suburban firm is probably your best bet.

Expect to drop a $2000-3000 retainer before they even get going. If your case can be settled early and amicably, your total cost will be in the $5,000-$7,500 range. If it goes to trial, expect to pay $30,000 for a straightforward divorce, and $50,000 for a complicated one. Of course, if the estate is sizeable, and you need a team of lawyers and their articling researchers, then you could top out in the $100,000-$150,000 range.

For a general description of the processes involved, read up the DIY guides published by the Self-Counsel Press. You can pick up a copy at London Drugs for about $25. It will give you an excellent overview before you get your feet wet, and if your situation is fairly benign, and both parties are cooperative, you could save a bundle, by filing it yourself for less than a thousand.

divorce

i don't know much about divorce, but i was watching an episode of "The Sopranos" in the bar the other night with the sound turned down (i got the jist of it) and if I were you I would talk to the top 3 divorce lawyers I could find in BC. apparently it creates a conflict of interest for your wife. So when she goes in and talks to the same lawyers, they're unable to represent her because you've already consulted with them.

Aint TV Grand? ;)

If you aren't paying her legal bills too much time can be your best friend. Hire a reg. low cost lawyer and take your time and waste a lot of hers. When the hurt is done and you get the impression that she has tired of the fight (and the bills) you can both get serious and settle quickly. In the mean time get advice from your lawyer what you should pay for support in the interim (for kids etc.) and begin to make your payments. This takes the pressure off during the period when she is mad as hell and wants blood.

Hey Sincerity, you haven't told us what is your budget! Maury's description about the expense is very accurate. You have to put 2-3000 down in the retainer before the lawyer looks into your file. Any delay or extended fight will add to your pocket. So you'd better ask yourself what is your budget first before you start any legal process.

I was there before. Despite the fact it was not a big fight, extended for another month, it costed me $10000! So good luck!
