The outrage over Vancouver city councils decision to allow escort services and massage parlours to operate in a new downtown "live/work" zone got me thinking about this issue. Is this issue merely about people being morally opposed to prostitution or do they have legitimate concerns. Personally I can think of several legitimate businesses that I would find more objectional to have as neighbors. Who would you rather have as a neighbor and why?

I've got streetwalkers two blocks away, and three known drug dealers within two blocks.

The streetwalkers are trashy and obvious, but they don't really bother anyone in the area (i.e. you don't hear a lot of tales of them using the neighbour's garage and such.)

The local drug dealers are the same -- strictly out-of-house sales to people who know where to go, so they don't bother anyone. (Contrast that with 5th & Cambria in Philly, where you'll find kids on bikes hawking their wares at full volume, letting everyone know what they've got for sale. Very well organized crews with lookouts for blocks around, and as aggressive in their turf wars as you might fear.)

The only real problems for the locals around here are the kids and the punks who rip cars to go joyriding, or who vandalize things for no sane reason. Very few serious thieves, mostly thefts of opportunity if someone leaves things out in the back yard (bikes, lawnmowers, BBQs, lawn furniture, etc.) or forgets to close and lock the garage or house. If you've got a good guard-dog or security system, you really don't have much to worry about.

Any hangout for the kids is a problem, whether it's a corner store or a "friend" whose parents are gone for the evening. Worst are the stores and gas stations which are open 24/7 -- that's where you'll find the serious addicts hanging around the payphones trying to make connections. Most of them are ok, but every once in a while one of them turns to mugging and needs to be smacked down by the police or the local enforcers -- whichever finds them first.

One thing you have to admit about well-organized local crime -- it's relatively peaceful as long as no turf wars are happening. They don't want the neighbourhood attention that a string of B&E's or muggings brings to the area -- it's hard enough for them to keep a low enough profile to coexist with LE around.

Neighbours outrage!

Damn right its an outrage to have an escort as a neighbour. She should move into my basement. This way I don't even have to go outside to get to her, when I can just go up and down the staircase. At least I know she won't have any trouble paying the rent. :)

Fortunately I have no interest in the local streetwalkers -- they're about the same class as slum-district crack ho's. You couldn't pay me enough to chance them.
