CALGARY - A black lab named Escort is among the University of Calgary's most recent graduates.

The special skills dog walked the stage at the university's convocation ceremony Thursday along with Souheil Saab, a paraplegic man he helped through a law degree.

Escort, who wore his own cap and gown, received a honorary "Dogtor of Paws" degree for his efforts. He attended all of Saab's classes, went to court with him, sat through his exams and accompanied him in debating competitions.

"It's been a long haul but we've actually completed it," said a grateful Saab.

Fellow graduates had no objections to sharing the stage with a dog.

"Escort's a part of the class. He's a graduate of 2005, just like the rest of us," said one graduate.

The lab is the first four-legged animal ever to receive a honorary degree from the University of Calgary.
