Does anyone keep a supply of cash for emergencies? Not just pooning emergencies, but THE BIG ONE?

I just went to a couple of ATM's and they were down for some reason. I thought if it was an emergency like an earthquake and no power how would I get money? In a big emergency that could go on a long time, and maybe debit and credit cards couldn't be used, too.

It might be handy to keep $500-$1000 in ready cash.

In the case of a disaster, I'd rather have stockpile of goods ready so that I could stay inside. People thrown into chaos are scary.

Then again, I have no such stockpile at hand, having insufficient dread of a disaster.

I only use my debit/credit cards for big purchases as I usually have cash available at all times for those random emergencies.

I also never leave home without cash, there are times when Desjardin merchant services and the banks communications go haywire and the abilty to pay cash saves the aggrivation of having to wait.

I have an emergency kit in each vehicle with all the standard emergency supplies (first aid kit, water, survival food , ect). In that kit I keep about $300 in small bills/ change. I have dipped into it a few times when I was strapped for cash, but mostly it's there in case of the big one.

I do the same. I've had to use a little of the cash a couple of times when after getting fuel all forms of electronic payment did not work. Not really an emergency but it did save a fair bit of inconvenience.

Bulletproof vest and a shot gun with about 250 rounds are all you need in a time of emergency... Funny how you can get cash, food almost anything...
mmmm hmmmm... i like it badger, and i'm only short the vest - how much are they nowadays?

no but i should, it has happened to me once, as well all the atm's were down. I couldn't get a buck if my life depended on it

For the big one?
A gun? I guess it would come to that. But remember Japan and there earthquake.
I don't think our society will be as well behaved as that.
I have a big family extended family, I would imagine we would all hunker down and go into survial mode together.

I have a floor safe hidden away in my place and for a while I had $5000 in cash tucked into it.....it got depleted due to a renovation I could not pass on.....I do like my new engineered hardwood floor though :clap2:......before that happened I broke out that huge cash roll for an extra buy in at my poker game one night and 1 of my guests got his nose out of joint due to my largesse of money....frankly he got pissed off as as he said "I cant compete with that".......on a side note I need to restock my safe with a nice bundle of Bordens......CASH IS KING.

I am not sure what good cash would do in the event of "The Big One"
I do need to restock my firstaid kits and stock up on goods emergency supplies and what not. I always thought being on the island I would need a boat and life jackets in case we go under. I have no idea what would happen to the island would we go inland more or drift further away.

Anyways I will not be on the island much longer and sure as hell hope I am not downtown Van when we and if we do get the Big One.
Dont worry about the boat or the life jackets as Vacouver Island is not about to sink beneath the ocean......the seniors lobby has too much sway about the island of "newly-wed and nearly dead" over mother nature LOL

I always have enough cash available for a weekend pooning. Those SPs don't accept credit cards:)

Yeah, I'd like to see people dragging gold and silver around and try to keep from getting robbed and try to negotiate purchases at the local Petrocan or market.

I like to have ~$1,000.00 in my sock drawer for emergencies (like a sweet, 95lb Japanese escort with pigtails arriving in town with short notice...)

They did for thousands of years. Paper money is recent when you look at human history. In 1500 Britain, a single silver coin was a man's wages. Most of what people carried around was copper.
That's exactly why paper money was invented.
