Yay I just downloaded Matrix revolutions from Kazaa!! I didn't want to take the chance of going to the theater if it was gonna suck as bad as #2 (no pun intended). But I am curious how people feel about companies like napster, kazaa, etc.

I also voted "against it out of principle". I do use P2P networks however. I do not download anything other than software.
I will not under any circumstances use kazaa. The reason for this being all the spyware loaded into it with their various sponsers.
I use kazaalite ++, it uses the same software as kazaa, without the spyware, and the forums there are very useful.

I voted for "previewing purposes" because I like to dl movie trailers, but that's as far as I get. As for the movies themselves, I rely on word of mouth from movie fans with similar tastes to mine, and only watch the ones that interest me. As for DVDs, I love the extra features such as commentaries, easter eggs and cut footage. So I'd never download pirated movies.

BTW, the Lord of the Rings - Two Towers Extended DVD hits the streets tomorrow - Yay!

I voted against it because I own and have registered several copyrights, none of which would appear on Kazaa or Morpheus, but I wouldn't be too keen on having them ripped off. True, several 'artists' use programs like Kazaa to distribute their music to an audience larger than they would have received normally, and true, downloading a Metallica song from Kazaa is like stealing a jubejube from the bulk foods section in Superstore -- but for me, it's the principle. Sorta a case of "If I don't do it to them no-one will do it to me."

Or the please-God-don't-let-me-get-in-a-legal-battle-with-Disney clause.

I voted for previewing only. I hate having to buy a whole album when one song gets stuck in my head and then the rest of the songs suck. I've never downloaded movies, but I don't go to the theatre either. I can't justify $15 bucks for a movie when the actor got paid $15mil to be in it. Are the theatres charging more to make up for having to pay Halle Berry for showing her tits once? I think so, but this is a whole other rant. PS-I used kazaa for a while, Napster a long time ago and now use WinMX...

I use Kazaa lite almost exclusively, have tried using imesh, found it is better to download music from kazaa, movies from imesh.... not sure why. I really dont find a problem with downloading the material, audio, video or software. I tend to like some more obscure music often not readily available in the local stores, plus I dont have alot of time to go to the theater's and sit and watch a movie. Seems to work for me. The large corporations will make a killing whether I do or not. Be interesting to see the age demographics of those who think it is acceptable to those who dont........ I'm 27

in this matter there is but a simple answer to this and the industries are slowly getting there. not quite but almost there.

Lower the price of movies/games/music so that its no longer worth the time effort to download, record, whatever. and there will be little or no piracy going on. and instead there will be incredible sales records going through the roof and attendance at the theatres for just about any movie crappy or not.

its really that simple. the cost of CD's have gone down a tiny bit. but the mark up still remains in the high 300% area and some provinces have lowered the price of seeing a movie at the theatre. the cost of new DVD's slowly begin to fall but the latest releases still too high and sometimes worth it to simply download a dvd rip. all the quality and none of the expense. other than the cost of the internet connection and the cost of the blank CD.

what these anti piracy agencies/companies what have you, dont understand is that no matter what they do there will always be a loop hole to get through and someone will always make it easier to copy. as we evolve the software evolves the methods of anti piracy get better. and what they all forget is that we humans evolve too and get smarter and use the very same technology that is used to develop the anit piracy softwares so all it takes is one smart enough to simply undo it all/crack it/reverse engineer it/ or just go around it and patch it.

SexMachineGun, it is that simple if you want to pay the staff to make your movies/games/music five dollars an hour. I get paid twice of what some of my colleagues do -- and some get paid twice of what I do -- but that is because our education, skills, background, and experience are all different.

If you pay someone minimum wage to produce something, you'll get a minimum wage product. Even high-quality shareware and freeware have backgrounds in expensive software. If companies who produce rendering software or other programming affiliated programs paid their employees minimum wage, then software that depends on that would be even crappier. Imagine playing a cheap version of Unreal programmed in BASIC.

Ironically, many complain when a professional athelete gets paid several million to play two games a year, but few do when Halle Berry gets a few more to flash her tits.

I download BUT I rationalize it that very often I end up buying the video or CD if I like it. I find it especially usefull for checking out new music/performers that way I can try befor I buy.

Sometimes if I just wnat one song an artist does I just download that but often I end up going out and buying a CD if i like what I hear.

And Yeah i started because I was a pissed off consumer...

SMG, you're absolutely on the mark. For every group of smart guys out there trying to create ways to prevent piracy there are equally smart guys getting around it. I think in the future we will see some innovative marketing techniques being used. IMHO, the music industry just got caught off guard. They haven't handled the entire situation correctly, from pricing their products to marketing them, and now suing high schoolers for downloading their music. Personnaly I don't do it, not because of some higher moral standard, it's just not my thing. Besides, much of the music these garbage bands are turning out sucks.

I agree that if I like the movie, music enough, I'll buy the real version after I've previewed it. Mostly because I like to have the actual jewel case in my cabinet or the movie box, with all the special features that the DVD contains. Maybe I'm a DVD/CD snob. The only time that I really burn the music onto a disc is when I'm making a mix for roadtrips etc.
