So let me get this straight: soldiers fought in World War II to defend our freedoms against Nazis who would demonise a segment of the population, so that we would have the freedom to demonise a segment of the population? And this is exactly what they fought and died for?

Don Cherry has freedom of speech. And his employers have freedom not to be a part of it.

Beverly Hills. In the Kitchen eatin' vittles.
Agree or disagree, if we can obviously forgive the Prime Minister of our country for demonstrating racist behaviour, we can find it in our hearts to forgive Don.
Personally over the last many years I seldom watch Coaches Corner. Rather than being an informative dialogue on hockey topics it has evolved into the disjointed ramblings of an old man. Kind of like talking to that 85 year old neighbor who is a nice enough person but has very outdated attitudes and opinions.

Cheers

Trudeau at least attempted to apologise and cited a track record of moving beyond his racism. Don Cherry is digging in his heels so his employers responded in kind.

The problem with Trudeau was not defiance but hypocrisy.

Not to hijack this thread but to be clear Trudeau only apologised and "came clean" once he was exposed. In fact he admitted to not divulging this during the vetting process on his way to becoming the Liberal leader. I guarantee that if none of this had not been exposed by third parties, Trudeau would have never brought it up with Canadians.
Regardless, we've all fucked up at some point in our lives. Everyone deserves forgiveness.

All due respect to the veterans, but racist attitudes were quite prevalent in Canada in the 1940s. I mean the Klan was pretty big in Saskatchewan in the interwar period. Those people didn't just disappear once WWII started. We just don't talk about it.

Clu....seems you don't have a clu......
Care to take explain then? Granted I haven't been keeping up but last off I saw he offered no apology. "Everyone deserves forgiveness" doesn't mean everyone automatically gets it without putting in some effort. Remorse is usually a good prerequisite.

Don already explained that his choices of words were not the greatest.....but he is not going to apologise for what he said. So no need for him to as for forgiveness.

Feels like this is going around in circles. People not wearing poppies: yes bad, he has a point. It was more than a bad choice of words though to single out a specific subset of people for criticism. For that part, an apology is warranted.

The last interview I saw with him he honestly believes his bad choice of words was to say the two words "you people" and nothing more. Implying it was open to interpretation and he was misunderstood. But it was more than two words. The quote was, "...you people love ... they come here, whatever it is, you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey..." Genuinely would love a more plausible interpretation of that than meaning immigrants.

So if (a) there's no better plausible interpretation of what he said and (b) he sees nothing to ask for forgiveness for then, to Jethro Bodine's statement, "everyone deserves forgiveness" my reply holds.

I couldnt stand Don Cherry and stopped paying attention to him over 20 years ago... to me,the least interesting segment on HNIC, but lets not forget all the good he did for kidney disease victims, veterans, childrens hospitals and many other causes along the way.

Watching the interview, the US show gave a longer version of the "Coaches Corner". He started off with Mississauga, then Toronto, then You People....

Immigrants should appreciate Canadian customs; and more Canadians should wear a poppy on Remembrance Day....

Hate is such a simple word. Have you not hated something in your life. If you have not then you are the second coming of Jesus...... Hallelujah ......

Seriously Hate and Racism have to be overcome each day; by you as individuals. IMHO Don was not making a racist comment, only a general one about all the people that didn't wear a poppy /support Canadian Troops.

Then again some people need to grow a thicker skin.
