Dog Noses

I don't have a dog any more, but since their sense of smell is hundreds of times more sensitive than ours, I wonder how they cope with all the smoke in the air.

I also have wondered how they cope in homes with people who smoke.

Anyone have any info if dogs get irritated or have negative reactions to smoke in the air, and if so, what can be done to help them?

Just as our senses acclimate, so will theirs, but I believe they may take longer to recover.
I avoid exertion, just like my horses....but I will keep my dogs indoors when the smoke is thick, and I judge how bad it is with the view of the mountains.
I do smoke the odd cigar, but always outside....can't stand the smell ironically.

They do include pets in Air Quality Advisories...so I'd think they can be affected by smoke and such. Aromatherapy diffusers also usuall have wornings in regards to what essential oils are good for pets and which aren't...

Our dogs make a face like a snarl. They look like they are showing their fangs but they are trying to plug their nose.

We kept the furnace fan on and had a HEPA filter. We get lots of forest fires in Manitoba and you could see the soot on the filters.
A lot of cars have HEPA filters, but dogs always want to stick their nose out the window.

Re cigars, there is a guy at work who smokes a pipe. He STINKS. He smells exactly like he has been rolling in sheep shit.
He stinks whether he is smoking or not. It is NOT a pleasant smell.
Smoking pipes destroys their sense of smell so smokers have no idea how bad they stink. They need stronger and fouler tobacco because their taste and smell are numbed.
If you smoke a pipe, you smell like shit.

I smell like shit half the time anyways....which is why I shower, without fail daily.

Saw a guy today with an airdale. He said the dog started sneezing a few days ago, and he thought it was allergic to something, but when I mentioned the smoke he thought that might be the reason.

Different scents,put off different people.
Heavy garlic will get me hurling,long before tobacco.
I can discern the smell of dairy product consumption and understand how others could be put off by it.

To my way of thinking;the people who smell like shit,are those who fail to floss every 24 hours.
24 hours in the warm moist environment of the mouth;food stuck between teeth,becomes 2/3 decomposed food and 1/3 odiferous bacterial enzymes.
There is only one other bodily by-product,for which the same can be said.

my dog doesn't seem bothered by it,

but he is younger well sort of younger and extremely fit,
he runs every morning at the dog park,
I bush wack with him when I can, my daughter is a runner and likes his company,

I think the smoke bothers, the elderly and sick,
I saw people running and biking on the worst days,
I think the best cure for the smoke is be healthy and fit, whether dog or person.

my dog like most likes to stick his nose into shit and smell it,
so not sure what there taste for smell is,

my dog will follow a scent trail its amazing to watch, and wonder how they do that,
they use dogs to smell cancer
there was a dog at the pool I would go to would smell when its owner was going to have a seizure and wouldn't' stop barking

they would take the dog across the lake, and he would get excited when he smelled a body under the water,

On one hand;scent tracking dogs can be thrown off the track,by rainfall or bodies of water.
Footprint/hoofprint/pawprint is the source of the scent,for scent tracking dogs.
The volume of scent is microscopic.

On the other hand;a cadaver is a much larger volume of scent emission.
Think of water being baited with blood;drawing in sharks from miles away,following the richness of the scent.
