10 men arrested in sting
'Prostitution sweep' in Abby
The Times
Published: Tuesday, November 25, 2008
Ten 'johns' were arrested last week in a prostitution sweep by Abbotsford Police in the city's downtown core and the Clearbrook Road corridor.

Most of the men arrested Wednesday and Thursday were Abbotsford residents, aged 21 to 60 years, and frequent customers of the sex trade, said Abbotsford Police Const. Casey Vinet.

"There was no shortage of customers," he said. Some were arrested previously for the same offence.

The sting using undercover female police officers is part of the efforts by Abbotsford Police to reduce prostitution, and there will be more stings, said Vinet.

Both target areas are troubled by prostitution and drug over-use, he said, and one way to address the issues raised by local businesses and residents is to target the johns, he said.

"We believe that the johns are a big part of the problem. If we could get rid of the johns we could get rid of the soliciting," said Vinet.

He noted that while the police are doing what they can, "prostitution is a social problem and a law enforcement approach by itself will not solve it."

The men were released to appear in court at a later date, with each facing one count of communication in a public place for the purpose of prostitution.

Police and Crown counsel will look at each individual case to see if the person is a candidate for "john school," which diverts men from the court system, but educates them on the repercussions of hiring street prostitutes.

"We want johns to think twice about obtaining the services of a prostitute, said Vinet. "They should know that the person they are approaching may be a police officer."

I wish. Abby can't have a strip club because there is a huge religious population here and they shoot such things down....hence the reason we also have no clubs/bars (though we had a couple at one time and they sucked, now we have none)....we only have pubs.

My friends husband got caught on the last big crackdown, that would be several years ago now, it was in the papers. Poor guy was sobbing in jail, phoning the wife, soo sooo sorry...

Of course she forgave him, very sporting of her. She figured he would've chickened out anyway, and after all, he only wanted a blowjob....

He told my husband that the cop posing as a hooker was totally hot, he couldn't resist....maybe that in itself should be a warning! Beware of the REALLY hot pros in Abbotsford!

The police don't care about prostitution they just want it off the streets. The woman that loose business are the poorest and most marginalized woman. I am sure if those woman could arrange an in-call they would.

This is why Hatrick's efforts to collect the phone numbers of these women and help them establish some regular business should be lauded by everyone here!

Well done Hatrick!

Follow-up questions to Hatrick. When you see a girl at her place do you still use your flashlight?:)

@the Meat Market!!!lol
That's 'street hookers', Melissa, not elegant escorts!
i think it's important not to fall into this way of thinking, they are you...you are them... workers on the street are there for the same reasons we all are, work...money.

we are lucky to be able to work safely, the lack of jobs with the closure of 23 strip clubs in 3 years and the closure of a number of massage parlors has forced those who can't work from home onto the street, no choice, kids have to eat, rent must be paid.

also, as the usually younger, more marketable exotic dancers enter the escort job market which is already strained to the max the trickle down effect is that some one looses their job and maybe pushed onto the street.

remember, a few bad decisions and you are on the street, if the police want to turn on "elegant escorts" they can and trust me they will. once all of the street level workers are dead, which is what will happen, they will have to justify their jobs/budgets somehow and here we are, criminals, ready to be the foundation of their work product.

"othering" amongst sex industry workers is silly. we are all the same, the escort, the exotic dancer, the porn star, the crack ho...if we don't care about "us" who will? please, we're all we have.

i want a t shirt that says crack ho...i'll wear it to meetings;) with the government!
