Help!!! Any of you computer guys that can help, I would appreciate it.

I had a power failure at home and now when I go to start my computer, after I key in the password, it starts up and immediately shuts down. It has never done that before and I don't know if the computer is now beyond repair.

If it is fried and I need a new one, can I save my files from the hard drive?

:(

You can try re-installing windows again over top of your current install, that way all your shit is still there, but windows will replace any files that got hooped.

Sounds like you should just grab a geek, or bring it to futureshop or something for repairs.

You might not need a new computer. If its just one or two parts that are hooped, it would be cheaper to just replace them.

I was hoping that was the case but it is about six years old and has slowly been falling apart. The monitor is wonky, the burner is toast and it is really slow at times.

I will have to decide for sure shortly as I am now offline at home - which mean no PERB unless at work!

I doubt your computer is physically damaged. Most likely your Windows registry is corrupt. Try booting the computer into "Safe Mode" or "Last Known Good Configuration" as Manhattan suggests.

If have access to broadband Internet and a CD burner, you may want to download Knoppix and burn it to CD (700 meg). Boot your computer from this CD and you should have fully-functional, internet-ready computer that doesn't even need a hard drive to work.

If there is some hardware problems that prevent Knoppix from running (like some bad memory) Knoppix will likely tell you what problems it encountered. Less guesswork as to what is wrong.

That actually happened to me as well.

What i realized that the power failure messed up my ram. So I pulled the ram out and booted the computer and then shut it down and reinstalled the ram. Then everything worked fine again.

hope that helped

Thanks for all your advice fellas. Right now I have a computer guy looking at it but he suspects that it is not worth fixing. Yes, six years - it is a Celeron chip! Well, I will be shopping now for a new PC. Damn, new PC vs. pooning?? What to do, what to do. :D

WOOOHOOO!! My new computer just arrived! I guess it is like an early christmas present to myself - although for what it cost, it could be seen as 12-15 visits to SPs. Oh well. :D

What kind of computer did you buy? If you're not a gamer, a very competent system can be had for under $400 (w/o monitor).

For the amount of money that you spent, I'd expect that thing to cuddle with you afterwards. :D

It is a laptop with all the updated software compatiable for work with a ton of memory and a big hard drive. My old computer was just too old and crappy with old software. What the hell, I needed to upgrade.

And it is a laptop so I can bring it to bed with me. ;) :D

LOL! Too funny Mello. :D

Now that winter is here, then perhaps it was a good idea to get a laptop and get it all hot in bed. ;)

DELL SUCKS!!

Boy did I ever make a mistake. I strongly urge all you PERBerts to stay the fuck as far away from DELL as possible! Everything about them from sales, customer service, customer care and tech support were fucked up. I wouldn't want to wish what I just went through on my worst enemies - ok, actually I would.

Diddo!! I was helping a neighbour with her Dell system last night. Apparently her power supply died. Took about 30 seconds to determine it. So we call Dell Tech support up.... just to make sure.... and so we can order the part. It took a hour for the support person to come to the same conclusion. Looks like the tech support was in some 3rd work country and he had a crash course in English. Had problems understanding the word "BOTH".. as in Both Fans does not work... Then he keep putting me on hold so he can ask for help. ARRRGGGGHHHH!!!

In a nice wet pussy!
I recently bought a new desktop, and was considering Dell at some point. Beyond technical issues, two things held me back; if things went wrong, I'd have to pay to ship it back, and they did not have a configuration that satisfied my requirements, no matter how I tried. Their "creative" sales offerings can be easily matched or better'ed locally for a cheaper price, with popular name brands like H-P or Compaq, so I went that route. And, if anything goes wrong, it is much easier to return - just throw the whole lot in any box and drive to the store.

Plus. Compaq as in my case, has a much better technical support network in place, namely H-P, their parent company. Not that I wil ever use it as I take care of mine, but it's nice to know they are standing by if I do need it. I have owned many H-Ps and Compaqs in the past, and have found them to be excellent rugged platforms.

Needless to say, I am very satisfied with my purchase!
