I was talking recently to a coworker and the conversation turned towards the City Centre Airport.

One thing that we did agree on is that the city should of went ahead with a vote on whether to close it or not. You would think that a city insider would of tipped "Envision Edmonton" off that their petition would be useless and thrown out on such a small technicality.

I believe in the city taking such a position that Mayor Mandel cost himself a number of votes. They could of held the vote (about the airport)....it would of pleased everyone involved, and then whatever the outcome, everyone can go home and know that there was a fair vote put out on the issue.

On another note about the City Centre airport, my coworker was telling me that there are a number of bomb shelters built near the armoury (north of the RCMP building) with tunnels that go to the Royal Alex, etc. That's why that area never got developed. (north of the armoury). Can anyone confirm/deny if such bomb shelters exist?

Curious about feedback on the issue.

Most people I talk to either want it closed or don't care - their main election issues are reducing crime and homelessness, road construction, new NHL arena, and getting LRT expansion done.

The Envision Edmonton leader amuses me...but I hesitate to say why because he looks like the majority of fellow pooners I've met and could be a fellow PERBert for all I know!

Question: is it true that the Husky Tower was originally supposed to be built in Edmonton? Someone told me that was the original plan, but due to CCA's height restrictions it ended up being built in Calgary (and is now known as the Calgary Tower).

no previous plebicite said to close the muni, just combine "scheduled service"

a vote would have been good, yes or no

calgary tower was due to city interference and attitude NOT height restrictions

I am probably dating myself here but I miss PWA. Until we get decent ground transportation to and from the International, at rates that do not cost half as much as your flight, I'd support any commercial airline flying in and out of the Muni. Most of the short-haul flights were longer, with one or two stops but I really liked the convenience of getting to and from the airport.

From my understanding, there never was a actual close the city center airport vote. The wording didn't specifically say shut er down.

I don't think the city of Edmonton understands just how much is going to be lost closing the Muni. As a pilot myself, I know what an incredible bonus it is for a city to have a convenient airport for corporate and private aviation, and to support HUGE numbers of jobs in aircraft maintenance and other aviation related industries. Closing City Centre is an absolutely stupid idea, and will ultimately result in a huge economic loss to the city. Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, especially with the "International" (ha, ha) airport half way to freakin' Calgary. I think this move represents nothing more than short-sited greed wanting to sell the land.
