OK, so they are currently 1 - 1 in California and 1 - 1 versus Anaheim, but recently, I have been really annoyed at certain players and their recent display of bonehead hockey. Namely, "Special" Ed Jovonovski, Brendan Morrison and Markus Naslund.

Special Ed just annoys me. If he keeps playing shitty defence like he has been, then he definitely does not deserve any chance of making the olympic team. Fuck, we should have trading him and Cloutier for Bouwmeester and Luoungo.

Morrison should just be demoted to the checking line to get him to start playing defence again. If you keep the big line together, you have three guys who can't play defence all that well, and out of the three, Morrison is just not scoring. Besides, during a PP in this game, he made two BRUTAL passes in his own zone that could have resulted in a shorthanded opportunity.

Naslund. He was never that good defensively. His only saving grace is that he scores. If you ask me, I would take a complete player like Steve Yzerman over Naslund any day of the week!

I heard from a co-worker today that the refereeing has been less that wonderful, to put it mildly...

At least Linden scored on the first Canucks penalty shot of the season... since they were on the PK at the time, does that still count as a shorthanded goal..?

Yeah, the refereeing has been crappy, particularly in this game.

Linden, though there have been many critical of him, has just done his job playing defence, day in day out.

I think his goal would just be a penalty shot goal and not a short handed goal as the clock was not actually running and a penalty was not being run down when the penalty shot was actually taken.

Ok.. that makes sense... Shorty and Larcheid (I'm at work and stuck listening to the game on NW98) bot mentioned it being shorthanded, but it didn't seem right...

The "new" NHL is practically unwatchable. The Canucks are still going nowhere until they add more toughness, especially on "D".

But in the "new" NHL toughness is a crime. A team would be better off with a backchecking forward than a big thug defenseman who, if he uses his muscle ends up in the box for 2:00.

I swear Kurt Browing and Elvis Stojko could play in this league. Hell, they could go into the corners.

I believe if the team is on a power play, and score a goal on a penalty shot, it is a power play goal, and if they are killing a penalty and they score on a penalty shot it is a short handed goal.

a short handed situation is when 1 team is below the numerical strength of the other team. Think of it this way:

At the time of the infraction(linden was fouled from behind on a breakaway), while they were shorthanded. The penalty shot is to replace the scoring chance(Canucks were shorthanded)...therefore....its a shorthanded goal.

great that linden got the goal on the penalty shot but i think even he was embarassed. what a shitty call. it was not a penalty shot call the guys stick barely touched his leg.

when i say the play live and the whistle blew i said to someone "hey, we could have a penalty shot here....", then i saw the referee point to centre ice, and i thought kewl...(my opinion is that there arent ENUFF penalty shots called)..

i watched the replay a couple times and agreed with the call:

-on a breakaway
-fouled from behind(albeit slightly, i think he hooked him)
-over centre red
-prevented from a reasonable scoring chance

therefore...penalty shots the right call, (i think)
