I'm sure next election Canadians are going to elect a Conservative government because Ford, Pallister, Moe and Kenney are doing such awesome jobs.

Just kidding. O'Toole will be lucky to keep 75 seats.

I think a majority of Canadians would not vote Liberal if given a viable aleternative.

So far at least, the Conservatives have really blown their many opportunites to provide that credible alternative. Here is just one example of where they blew their chance:

https://torontosun.com/opinion/columnists/opinion-conservative-climate-plan-falls-flat

And where did the Conservatives find O'Toole ??? 30 million plus people in the country and that is the best they coudl find ?!?! You might arge that Trudeau was a poor choice by the Liberals, but at least he has kept them in power thru several elections. O'Toole has the charisma of a tooth pick and I think I'm as likely to get elected Prime Minister on write in ballots as he is representing the Conservatves.

And as far as the NDP are concerned, if they got into to power, God help us. It might actually be good news for me as I am now officially a senior citizen and likely the NDP would throw me all kinds of juicy benefits, but future generations would likely look back at the changes the NDP would make and say that is where the economy of the country went to hell. You just have to look at how the NDP have been behaving during this pandemic. No matter how many freebees the Liberals give out, Singh is still calling for more.

like the republicans, the ultra right wing christian conservatives have embeded theirselves into the pc party. stuff like abortions, gay/lesbian/trans rights make people look at them and go elsewhere.

Can’t vote for the Liberals because of bill C-10 and Trudeau’s past ethics violations, Can’t vote Conservative because of the religious puritan wing and the NDP are pretty much DOA anyway. I’m sure Trudeau will easily win next election because I think the majority of Canadians are satisfied enough with how he’s handle COVID and the thought of handing the Conservatives power is too terrifying a risk.

I am considering spoiling my ballot in the next federal election as each choice has serious defects for me.

OMG…. cry me a fucking river……
well considering the fact that that law was past in 2014 and the conservatives lost power in late 2015 and there wasnt really an attempt by the feds during that time period to force the city to enforce those laws... Also Erin O'Toole is such a weakling pushover its hard to see him even bothering if he wins

I'm finding myself in the same situation. All 3 parties have too many negatives. Have to pick the least worst of the 3. I do wish the Libs had a change of leadership though.

So what are the needs of the people? And what are the needs of the government?

People need food, shelter, water, and a way to make money (job), and some happiness...

The government needs an increase in money flow to stimulate the economy, pay off the aboringinals, and look out for the people of Canada, including new defence spending on major equipment, develop the North Western passage and charge money for transit of ships up there.

So that means more taxes, but that can be offset with new economic development which will develop their own taxes for the government.

Canada needs to do more manufacturing for its citizens. Why? The cost of nuts and bolts are outrageous, used to be 5 cents or so, now it like 2 to 3 dollars. An Acme threaded rod cost about 100.00 here in Canada, while down in the states it about 40.00
Any type of speciality made supplies (coming from another country) is usually 80 to 160% more expensive here in Canada.

Go to Cdn Tire and look at the prices of nuts and bolts. What retailers are doing are pricing the nuts and bolts individually raising the price on them. Used to buy bolts in packages that were good value. Now? not so good value.

Recycling will be a big thing. Now with China not taking our garbage plastics and metals and electronics, it has to go some where. Given that back in the early 70s the manufacturers knew that recycling 60% of the plastic was not happening. So today alot of that ends up in a landfil....

Another thing backing up is medical waste. Needles and other stuff.

So a plan is needed and fast to get things moving again. None of this crap about foreign investment, Canadians should invest in themselves. Safety and Environment should be the foremost in starting any new business ventures.

The problems arise when investors expect a big return on their investments. IN the Future that will be negliable. If people thought the dirty thirties were bad, what we are coming to in the next 25 year will make that seem like heaven. Why do I say this, well the bank will break in the future and it won't look pretty. The warning signs were the 2008 Bank Fraud where the banks got bailed out. Eventually something will fail and it will colidiscope out of proportion....Add in rising world temperatures and more gobal flooding due to climate change, people should make sure they built their house on solid rock and not in a 300 yr floodplain.

Every major city should have greenhouses to supply fresh food in winter climates (a major investment).
Railways should be doubled for transporatation costs to lower.
Canals/water ways are cheap to tranport, but cost high maintenance for locks etc.
Laws have to be changed for support the Canandian economy to help Canadian companies compete in gobal markets.
Alot of stuff has to be looked at to make Canada more competitive on a gobal scale.
Don't give away our raw resources. That has got to stop.

Pensions, and RRSPs--- Think they are safe? Right now the last of the baby boomers are retiring and starting to withdraw from those mutual funds.... guess what happens, the value of that fund goes down. Should ask about the stats for that.....

I love political threads. Everyone is so certain about what to do if they were the head of state, as if everything was so simple.

In some twisted parallel universe, the collective members of the PERB Lounge is the head of state. I'd pay good money to watch that.

Well, he did. Turns out that his avowed affection for China hasn't gained him any benefits, not even an autographed photo of Xi Jinpiing. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that Trudeau is casting about to find a new object for his ardent affections, in the hope of gaining more tangible benefits.

Does anyone want to speak about the pros and cons of domestic manufacturing? Beyond the "X is too expensive now"?

Well he should, given his love affair with Cuba and communism....
The scary thing about China is that before it was off balanced. Now it is focused. That is scary.
Trade links by railroad from China to Germany.
Water route from China to Africa, up the Suez and to southern Europe. With a major port being built in Pakistan. High security and all.
Build up of Navy with 60 plus conventional submarines, and new frigates. New top of line superiority fighters with some awesome missiles. New tanks that rival the American Abrams latest one. Serious coin spent on the military.
Bad on democracy. Good on business plans. Although alot of the tech seems similar to the West (Stolen by hacking maybe).
World biggest source for rare-earth metals, which support high tech in the west.
Starting to become the best supplier of metals and small machines (that are cheaper- eg Rikon in woodworking comes from China). But the machines are more advanced than the West. Why, Rikon is putting helical head cutters in the their planers/jointers while NA and European, you have to go buy a separate head (to replace the 3 blades). With the cost of the machines being 2000.00 cheaper than the West for a machine with a helical head. In other words they are getting outsourced by China and outplayed and out manufactured.

Beyond the obvious?

On the pro side we have a lot of raw material. We export much of it and may add a degree of value to some manufacturing but if you take the captive view to try to control a cradle to grave, farm to table, bitumen to the car, tree to a chair, etc point of view, we are exporting jobs.

On the con side, it is a global economy and there are trade agreements etc that would need a redo, and in some cases we simply do not have the infrastructure, ie chip fabs, and as we see vaccine manufacturing. When you look at the low cost of goods in Walmart, Amazon, etc with decent quality that are not made locally, it's a tough call for the consumer to buck up more (maybe a lot more).

Anyone remember Canadian textile manufacturing? GWG in Winnipeg and Montreal? Janzen swimwear in Vancouver? just off the top of my head. All gone. A deeper dive I am sure would create a list that could make any Canadian sad.
