Speaking of Hockey did anyone watch that tonite , saw the first part and
second part is tomorrow nite.

I wonder why they didn't wait till next year to run this since it will be the
35th anniversary of that greatest of moments in Canadian Hockey History.

Here's a question for you all. Where were you when Canada and Russia
battled it out for supremecy in the hockey world?

I was in grade 9 and we watched a couple of the games in school I think
it was two games, to far back to remember. Although life went on it seemed
like the world stood still for that most memorable moment in Canadian
history, everyone everywhere stopped what they were doing and watched
the series to the end.

its a bit gorky ... trying to shove too much into too little time and create some drama but it plays out like a bunch of hockey players trying to act.

they would have been better off to rebroadcast the actual games with some before and after commentary by the players.

(I got to watch the whole series at school ... the last time they did that for us was when Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon!)

I was actually on a BC Rail train coming from Prince George to VCR. We actually stopped in Williams Lake, got off, found a relative and watched it at their house that day.

Our family caught a bus back to VCR the next day.

I was in the 1st grade.

I was working at my first full time job after leaving school. The boss brought in a TV so we could watch the games from Russia.

I was in grade school at the time, being all of 8. One thing I didn't like about the show last night was the switch to black and white for scenes in the Soviets' dressing room. I found that to be steroetyping and in very poor taste. Speaking of poor taste, gees Alan the Eagle was a schmuck and Phil Esposito was an arrogant prick, well at least in the movie.

It's too bad that the NHL's hatred of the fledgling WHA prevent some of the big names in the new league from playing on Team Canada, such as Bobby Hull and Gordie Howe. Afterall one game was played in Winnipeg, then a WHA city. Being a one time Jets fan, it's nice to learn that John Ferguson was such an excellent assistant coach. Because as the General Manager of the Jets he SUCKED!

Waiting until next year, for the 35th anniversary might have been since, but given it's taken 34 years to finally make a movie about the 1972 series was far too long of a wait. :(

So can someone tell me why those hockey games were such a big deal, even today?
Was Canada going to cease to exist as a country if our team lost, or what?
Yes, I am a hockey fan, but if this is what constitutes our national history then I hang my head in shame. It's only a game for fuck sakes!

It was a big deal back then because the Soviets had never played NHL'ers. It was the first time pro hockey players went up against the amatuer powerhouse Soviets. As the movie depicts, the NHL'ers were consumed by their arrogance, taking the Soviets far too lightly. It demonstrated that Canadians, and Americans to a lesser extent, weren't the best hockey players anymore. That the Soviets had caught up. And of course in the few years following, Swedes, Finns, and Czechs as well. While the NHL'ers in the end prevailed, it was far from the cakewalk much anticipated and NHL coaches adopted some of the passing and skating techinques employed by the Soviets. Overall the 72 series improved the NHL product for about a generation.

Blasphemer! Keep talking like that and it's straight to hell for you! I remember the mood in 1972 to be kind of like you describe...the world coming to an end. The principal of our highschool insisted that all the students watch the games [I think there were two during school hours] in the gym. Picture approximately 400 kids sitting in bleacher seats trying to watch a hockey game on three or four 16" televisions in the middle of the gym. It was ridiculous, but you could have heard a pin drop in that place. It was pretty tense. :)
Whenever the NHL'ers lost did the principal make everyone duck and cover underneath their desks? :D

It was a very different time. The NHL was the best hockey in the world, bar none, or so we thought. Russia was the Soviet Union, we still all lived under the threat of a nuclear war which most believed would blast us all back to the stone age. It was more than a hockey series, it was competition between western profesional athletes which were not permitted to compete in the Olympics and the "Amateurs" which were fully supported by the Soviet state. We were tired of having our amateurs lose to Russian Amateurs which were professional in everything but name. Suffice to say, you had to be there!

In one word baby !!

PRIDE !!

This series was about war without war. There was the cold war eluded to
in an earlier post. This was Canada's chance to take on the red threat
and we were in the eyes of the world at that time.

It was more than a hockey game for sure, it was national pride with the
world watching. Think about it, the only other thing I can think of
that held people spell bound was Neil Armstrong putting his foot print
on the face of the moon. It compares to that !!!!!!

Also the guys who made up team Canada had only a short time to get to
know each other where the Red Army team had been playing together for
a long time. Yes that was Canada's contribution to the world in the name
of the greatest game that exists..........HOCKEY !!

Are we known for anything better?

I remember the series and thinking (like everyone else) that the pros would destroy the Russians. The TV show was pretty corny and didn't really show enough of the back room dealings and the editing of the on ice stuff was just odd. Can't believe they threw in that old joke about unscrewing the plate in the floor and the chandelier falls. That was an old joke in 1972. Some of the scenes were pretty cheesy in this production, but that was the worst. Basically we won on a fluke goal and because we beat them up and Bobby Clarke broke Kharlamov's ankle. The NHL never recovered and finally had to admit players other than Canadians could play the game. Now the top players are all Europeans.

Maybe it's just me, but I didn't think this show added anything to my understanding of the 72 series. It felt like my own fading memory. Several highlights and little depth.

I didn't watch this show. The moment in my memory is one of those magic moments. I really am not interested in any of the BS going on off the ice. I just remember the hockey. I remember jumping up and down on my desk at school whenever Canada scored. And the Henderson goal......

I did buy the DVD set of the complete games and will watch them a couple more times but anything off the ice, I have no interest.

I missed the second half of the program on Monday, cause I was out that evening. I hope they show it again cause I'd like to know who won the series.
