in Churchill Cup action. The Churchill Cup is an annual rugby tournament that was recently created in order to help with the development of the Canadian and US national teams, which are classified as Tier II nations (we’re not as good as the likes of England, New Zealand etc. similar to Canadian soccer in that respect). It started off as a mini-tournament in Edmonton with only three teams (England A, Canada and USA) and has now expanded to six with venues in Edmonton, Ottawa and the San Francisco Bay area.

Canada and the US were playing for the 5th and 6th positions having finished bottom of our respective pools. To Canada’s credit, we played pretty well in pool matches and nearly defeated Scotland A.

Canada pretty much controlled the match against the US and even scored a couple times while a man down (men sent off to the sin bin). Next up will be qualifiers for the 2007 World Cup. Canada looks to do well in those as our toughest competition will be from the US.

On a final note, Edmonton will be host to the Women’s World Cup this August. It should be very exciting time as the Canadian women are ranked among the top 5 (I think) in the world. Hope you Edmontonians get out there to support our women.
