Figured I'd throw it out there since I'm lookin - any suggestions on a good quality barber shave? (looking for face to be shaved, and looking to get the head pretty well shaved too :)). Have never utilised a barber before, so figured I'd try to get some suggestions on a good one before just waltzing in somewhere :)

Now I'm the first to admit, when I saw the image at http://www.jdsbarbershop.com/ I drool'd ... so one must ask ... any ladies provide said shave, etc? SP, or non (ie just the hair services, no extras is fine too ... something about a ladies touch makes me think I'd need to follow up with a SP :p).

If it makes any difference, I'm on the north shore, so someone closeby is always good, but, I'm not averse to traveling if necessary...

Thanks!

from their site....

"no appointment necessary,
7 day guarantee"

WTF are they guaranteeing?

As for the concept.....dunno, there was a place in Calgary where you'd drop $150 (I think that's what it was) get a 30min therapeutic massage (by a so-so chick with her rmt, no happy ending), a steam and then a mediocre haircut but some bit titted hottie. Went once and decided if I wanted the same services I'd be better off with:
-going to a legit massage clinic, get a good massage - $70.00
-go the gym and get a steam - $0.00
-go to my regular salon for a good cut - $40.00
-take the saved $40.00 and put it back into the kitty for future fun

Nice lookin' ad but i believe those pic's are poached from an old Vanity Fair article on KD Lang so be prepared for more dragshow than fashion show.

Yeah, I figured it'd be too good to be true! lol. Ahh, but what a fantasy :D.

But in seriousness, still looking for some info and all that. Just a good barber recommendation would be great. But as an asside, there is something about being groomed by a SP ... whew! Maybe just one of those things I need to get out of my system! :D

Go old-school

If you want to go to a barber shop, then you need to go to a real barber shop, not some fancy schmancy place. I am not sure if he's there anymore, but there is a real old school barber on Pemberton across from the Cactus Club in North Van. I haven't been there, but he's been there for as long as I remember.

Now, if you want a real experience, try the barber I go to on Smithe between Burrard and Hornby across from the new theatre.

They are so old school that their clippers sound like classic muscle cars when they start up. I go there for a facial shave and a head shave (close cut, but not clean shaven). They are smelly old men who use their breath to blow away the bits of hair on your forehead. The place has a faint reek of old men and sweat. They even use a vacuum to suck the hair off your head when your done.

Great experience and cheap ($12). Of course, what I described above might not be selling features for some, but it's a great experience that makes it feel like you have found a little bit of history in today's modern world.

Thanks for the tips; just might check out that spot downtown that you mentioned :).

Something about getting a shave from a SP though, I don't know ... I think it's something I'm gonna need to fulfill sometime in the near future hehe.

The biggest thing you have to get over mainly is trusting the other person to run a straight blade down your throat. I'd prefer it occurred in a more public place than a private location. Then again, perhaps when my friends call me paranoid, they aren't just jesting

Ahhh the days of the old barber shop. Back in the day they used to be the gathering points, much like coffee shops are today. Men used to go there at least once a week, bullshit and play chess or checkers. I used to see a barber here in Edmonton who was from Budapest and he used the straight razor to shave ya with. Most barbers won't use the old straight razors anymore due to the AIDS scares. It's an awesome shave though, much better than the safety razors of today. Does anyone know of such barber shops here in edmonton? I know of one that is run by an ex-deep sea welder who got his lungs fucked up from stuff he inhaled. it's kinda nice to go to those shops rather than beauty salons, a bit more "manly"

Yah, I always remembered the one I mentioned earlier on Pemberton in North Van. I used to walk by it all the time and you could see the Playboy magazines on the table and the big 6x4' velvet painting of a naked chick. Classic.
