I happen to like the idea of holding back tax cuts to the rich and investing instead into programs that benefit huge segments of the population.

Putting public money into: Education, child care, pollution control I happen to agree with, rather than giving public money to a privileged few to enjoy that second yacht.

Liberal/NDP alliances in past have a good track record in Canada that had brought about the Health Care act, Pention plan, etc.

Public health care is producing waiting lines that simply do not exist in the US. 90+ physicians have opted out of Medicare in Quebec and there is a de facto 2 tier system there now as a result. Brokerage businesses have sprung up in BC and other provinces to arrange private treatment in the US. The majority of clients (both cases) are middle class people desperate for care. Currently in BC, if you need a double hip replacement or double knee surgery, you have to have 1 hip or knee done...then you go to the back of the line to wait to get the 2nd one done.

As for the "Pention", I assume you mean the CPP, which is a "pension" plan. Good luck to you if you are counting on this to still exist by the time you retire.

Politicians love people like you btw...ever wonder why that is?

The US doesn’t have waiting lines because many aren’t covered and simply can’t afford to pay. There is creeping infiltration of private businesses who want an American style health care system here so they can make huge profits from public funds that benefit only a privileged few. The Liberal and especially the Conservative govt’s in the provinces have allowed that to happen.
The idea of a universal Health Care system for all Canadians still is a good one.
But those private companies with a greedy eye for profit at public expense must love people like you.

It blows me away that the NDP is willing to overlook the worst political corruption scandal that this country has ever seen, in order the have their boney little hands on the contols of power. They really are no different than any other party. A pox on all of their houses.

In my books, handing the reins of power to a party that got less than 10% of the vote AND surrendering $4.6 billion of other people's money is the last nail in the coffin! Pleeeease, God, give us an election so these clowns can be turfed out!
What's the problem?

At least the NDP is refraining from being consumed by the Gomery Inquiry. All we hear from the Conservatives and the BQ is the Gomery Inquiry. When is the last those parties and in particular had the balls to talk about something else? Do they think by harping day in and day out on the Gomery Inquiry that the voters will some how forget their right-wing policies?

Also look at this way, the media would have been bound to raise the point that none of the parties are offering anything else. The NDP did and I think the changes to the budget are pretty good. Enough so that I just might for the NDP in the next election.

And my friend keep in mind until this deal Harper fully supported the budget, lock, stock and barrell. So if Harper, taking his marching order from 150 of the richest CEO's in Canada, was so concerned about the deep tax cuts in the original budget then why didn't he say something? Really, what is more important, the Gomery Inquiry or those big tax cuts for corporate Canada?

A hundred million dollars hardly makes for the worst example of government waste. Hell the old B.C. NDP wasted many times the money involved in the sponsorship scandal. As for political cortruption, well.......... maybe I'm just synical, I have a hard time with it but we have to accept that all politicians are corrupt. What else would drive them to acquire the power of government.
Where we will probably agree is that Martin has to go!!! Keep the Liberals in power if possible, but Martin is a bafoon. I sure miss Jean:Þ

Yeah, boo on the Liberal-NDP alliance.

I'd much rather support the Conservative (the "let's reshape Canada in the form of the United States" party) and the BQ (the "we hate Canada so much, let's just break it up" party) alliance.

[Let it be noted that I'm being sarcastic, just in case the comments above are too subtle for some people.]

Let's have things in prespective, 100 million is less money than what they have spend on lions bridge, you know the one between vancouver and north shore that still doesn't work and most likely they have to build a new one in the next couple of years.

All goverments are more or less corrupt and do not forget the last time conservatives were in power and their corruption.

The more important question is what kind of society do we want? Do we want a goverment that represnt the Candian values and our sense of social responsibilities or a wanna be ultra right in form of Harper?

There is no perfect choice, the choice is between bad and worse. Martin is far from perfect but Harper is scary.

Yes, in the grand scheme of things a 100 million dollars is a pitence. But to compare normal gov't waste with the exchange of envelopes of cash in the backroom of a cigar club is just not accurate. This is public money that went directly into the pockets of the Liberals in exchange for contracts. Maybe this has been going on for a long time, but this is the first time that it has been exposed and it needs to be punished. To let something like this go unpunished, would send all politicians a message that you can do whatever you want. In the past I have voted for all parties, I tend to consider myself right were the Lib's are politically. But I myself cannot ignore this scandal and thus will not be voting for them. The Lib's have had a long kick at the can and they have the arrogance of a longstanding ruling party, they need to by kicked to the curb for a few years, so they can purge their party of the useless hangeroners.

 whatever your political leanings, your vote should be exercised based on party principle and platform, not because a particular party, any party, has had a "long kick at the can".

The PC and Reform party formed an alliance, so is it that big a deal for the Libs and NDP to come together? It does appear to draw a lot of attention away from the Gomery inquiry, no doubt about that, but name a government without corruption?

Canada would be a better place if we kept the ultra-Conservative party and members out of Capital Hill. Move forward.

I am not suggesting that a party get kicked out because they have been in power along time. If they are doing a good job they deserve to stay. The actions of the Lib's the last few days have done nothing but show the country that they are desperate and willing to do anything to stay in power.

I have voted the entire political spectrum in my life, as I get older my priorities have changed. I understand and agree with all parties on certain issues, but the one thing I dont understand and dont agree with is blatant corruption the likes which we have seen recently.

As for the Conservatives, do I agree with all things they represent, no. Do they have some good ideas, like other parties, yes. But to label them "ultra conservative" is just catch phrase fear mongering. If you compare the Conservatives in Canada, I would venture to say that they are left of the Democrats in the U.S. So to call them "ultra conservative" is not accurate. IMO

It's a tad different my friend. The Canadian Alliance and the Progressive Conservatives agreed to dissolve their respective parties to create a new one. The Liberals and the NDP agreed only to a deal that will guarantee the latter's support on the budget.

I like that the NDP took the opportunity to advance some it is often overlooked policies. For the last 15 years the other parties have largely ignored the NDP, and now they are paying a lot of attention to them.

As the old saying goes about the Liberals, "if you don't like these principles we have others."

The Liberals, often called the natural governing party, have been in power so often because they excel at wheeling. If they need more support from the right, then they wheel to the right. If they need more support from the left, then they wheel to the left.

In short the essence of a Liberal is being able to have more than one position on a given issue, depending on the mood of the voters. I always get a laugh of those fools, especially the right-wing apologists in the media, that claim the Liberals are socialists. Man talk about knowing bugger all about politics and bragging about it.

"Ultra-conservative"???...The Conservatives have stated for the record (Harper has at least...though there are dissenting voices from Mike Harris and Preston Manning) that they will allow civil unions between gays and lesbians (fair compromise on the same sex marriage issue) and keep public health care..

By US standards this put the Conservatives at LEFT of centre...by European standards this actually puts them very near the centre...perhaps a bit to the right..

to hear their critics state things Harper = Benito Mussolini....sorry, I just ain't buying it!

Civil unions and same sex marriages are not the same thing. If a partner of a same sex union can receive health benefits or insurance benefits from their spouses employment, what's the big stink about two people getting married? Besides the current divorce rates amongst hetero couples is laughable. It just appears more like same sex couples have a clearer grip on reality.

And I may be wrong but with the recent poll about Canadians willing to accept privatized health care system, to me at least, seems to just stoke the fire. Was the poll conducted by the Conservatives?

Yes, it is great to shed more light on a somewhat unknown party. It really is only a matter of time before the two merge. Why I bet the more liberal Grits want to jump ship or at least try their damndest to sway the party to recognise and acknowledge the folks at a more socialist level, which with this deal they are doing.

Argh, this is useless. Never talk religion and poltics at the dinner table or the bedroom. And my former in-laws were hard core small town Conservatives, drove me nuts.
