Hi gang,

I'm thinking about selling my home and getting a condo instead. It's just easier for me to manage, I want more free time for myself on the weekends.
Anyways, I've been here for about 4-5 years and have not experienced an earthquake yet. I just want to know are the old/new condos safe from earthquakes. I guess what I'm asking is:Are they built with an earthquake in mind?

Yeah, they are.... just like New Orleans was built to withstand a category 3 hurricane. Then a 4 or 5 came along. Who knows how big the big one will be? I guess a lot of old buildings will fail. BC is tearing down old schools and rebuilding new ones in their place to be more earthquake resistent. There was that quake in SanFran a number of years ago during the world series between the Giants and Oakland A's. Can't remember how big the number, but some serious damage was done... the real big one will be a lot worse.

Thanks Sonny,

I would hate to be in a highrise when an earthquake hits. I've heard eathquake stories from my Japanese friend originally from Tokyo, it scared the s_ _it out of me. But I guess it depends how BIG the earthquake is. Nothing is guaranteed, but I would like to know what I'm buying.

I live in a condo myself but I have no idea whether it was designed to withstand earthquake. It's a fairly new building so I would assume the architect and engineers have implemented some sort of measure in the case of earthquake. However, I know for a fact that the Shaw Tower was designed with earthquake in mind, the engineering firm did a study at an earthquake lab claiming it could withstand earthquake of x magnitude, but I forgot the exact figure.

Take a look at this map, you should get a pretty good idea where not to live in an apartment/condo.

I'm not sure if any buildings can withstand the 9.0 magnitude quake that is due sometime this century.

The short answer seems to be yes.

Here's two links for you:

Scroll to the bottom for the reply - long rambling (possibly paranoid) question by the original poster.

See the fourth question down - any new (since 1999) construction would have to meet the Vancouver building code which has allowances for seismic activity.

The Vancouver Building Bylaw does not seem to be online anywhere.

In about 10 days SF will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 1906 quake.

Most buildings here can withstand a bit of a shake now since the World Series quake of 1989.
