Has anyone watched Deadwood on HBO? I'm loving it. I realize the language is a little far-fetched (I don't know if the words "fuck" or "cocksucker" were invented yet) but the costumes, sets and storylines are top notch. A nice one two punch on Sunday nights with The Sopranos.

Deadwood is great, the actors are good quality and the language may be a bit ahead of it's time but the point is that they must have said some "dirty" words.

If you can, see it.

It is an awesome new Classic Western series about the CA Goldrush era town of Deadwood and whole cast of ornery characters, gunslingers, locals, prospectors, hookers, thugs and suckers. They even weave in some historic legends like Wild Bill Hickock, Calamity Jane, etc.

Check it out.

You can probably download the videos already via Bit Torrent (a newer sharing service) and possibly even Kazaa.

Knowing HBO you'll probably be able to rent the season's shows at the video store, like Sex and the City...

Duff,

Torrent is an open technology, so there are many client applications and no spy ware that I am aware of (that is why I also use an older version of Kazaa Lite without the spy crap).

I have had the most success with TV episodes, but movies and CD albums seem to be a bit more flaky.

Here is an email I wrote to some friends describing Bit Torrent. Hope it helps.

-------------

Here is an awesome new open technology (Bit-torrents) that could replace the proprietary peer to peer (p2p) services (Kazaa, Grockster, etc.). All you need to know is that you can freely download most music, movies, tv shows, e-books & audio-books directly and the download rates are usually much faster than Kazaa. It is awesome for those missed TV episodes. I also doubt if the music or movie industry has yet caught on to this technology (they are focused on Kazaa users at the moment), so get it while the getting is good. Of course I would never suggest you use such a technology to illegally download copyrighted materials…

The technology (bit-torrents) is a really cool idea for downloading. Basically everyone downloading is also uploading, so as demand goes up so does supply. This is different from p2p in that with Kazaa people can selectively decide what they upload and the bandwidth can be limited, which is less efficient and so it can take very long to download things. Like Kazaa, Torrents also allows you to download the file from multiple users and it does this all automatically. Unlike Kazaa, it also copies small pieces (aka packets) from other users, so it can copy say the first 50% from all users who have already downloaded 50% or more (in other words it increases the number of sources as you don’t have to wait until all users have downloaded 100%).

Directions:

1. First you need a PC shareware program (optional donation) called Torrentstorm, which you can download here: www.torrentstorm.com This program is the interface you use for the downloads. Save to your hard drive.

2. Once downloaded, run the download (Torrentstorm1.1.exe) to install the program.

3. Run the program (Torrentstorm) from the start menu, then go to View menu and select settings.

4. In the options tab click the Associate button (to associate the bittorrent files with this program). You can also customize other options like Start & Resume transfers when loaded, etc.

5. Next open Internet Explorer and go to this website: www.suprnova.org or http://66.90.75.92/list_torrents/tvshows.html. Sorry, no porn on this site, but you can find other torrent sources on google.

6. Click on the media tab you are interested in (i.e. music, TV, movies, etc.).

7. Click the link of the download category you are interested in (i.e. 24, Sopranos, etc.).

8. On the bottom, there will be all the files associated with that category. Click the file you are interested.

9. Select open, not save as this is only the Torrent info file. After you click open the save dialog will appear to ask for a location to put the downloaded movie, song or file.

10. The download info will open in the TorrentStorm browser and will be listed in the window along with any other downloads that are in progress.

11, Note that downloads start slow and will speed up over time. My first movie download said 15 hours, but took maybe 3 (135Mb file). Note also that the download will also slow at the very end as less current users have downloaded that portion than have the first.

12, For other torrent files (i.e. movies, tv and music), check out http://www.torrentsearch.us (free registration).

This has been a public technology announcement. We now return you to your regularly scheduled program…
