WINNIPEG — Winnipeg police are investigating two cases where a computer virus may have covertly shifted money out of two on-line bank accounts.
Sergeant Rick Korstrom said one city family complained in February that $2,500 had been moved from their bank account without them knowing.
He said the family became aware of the theft only when the bank shut down access to their on-line activity because of the unauthorized transfers.
In the second case, a retired teacher discovered in April that nearly $2,000 had been transferred out of his account without his knowledge.
Sgt. Korstrom said police examined the victims' computers, and their investigation led them to a young man who recently immigrated to Winnipeg from Eastern Europe.
No charges have yet been laid.
Police have also identified five other Canadians whose on-line banking activity, access codes and passwords were secretly stolen with the virus.
