Actually you can't give Quinn credit for Todd Bertuzzi. Mike Keenan orchestrated that trade with the New York Islanders after Pat Quinn was gone.

Hmmmmmmm, my NHL Guide & Record Book lists Pat Quinn signing as coach of the Leafs on June 26, 1998, which makes it look like he could have been here for the acquisition of Bertuzzi. Burke joined the Canucks four days earlier, June 22, 1998. Therefore I would think Quinn stayed here at least until the end of that season (April 98), or even later until Burke got here, but my memory is muddy.

As a coach, I think Keenan orchestrated the Bertuzzi trade just by getting Messier to sign here in the summer of 1997. Once the 97-98 season started, the writing was on the wall for Trevor Linden and within five months (by Feb 98) Linden was shipped to the New York Islanders for Bertuzzi, Brian McCabe, and a draft pick which turned out to be Jarkko Ruutu.

I'm just going by the dates listed in my Record Book. It would be nice to find a fan site that chronicled the recent history of the team.

Actually Brian Burke didn't come here right after Pat Quinn was fired. Mike Keenan had a brief stint as interim General Manager, I think he actually shared the duties with some Orca Bay Bigwig. Mike Keenan played a big part in cleaning house and getting rid of many of the popular players who remained from the 1994 cup run, ie Kirk McLean, Martin Gelinas, Trevor Linden, and Gino Odjeck. Mike Keenan was the one who traded Trevor Linden to the New York Islanders for Todd Bertuzzi and Brian McCabe.

I think change was in order and fortunately for Pat Quinn and Brian Burke, Mike Keenan got to do most of the dirty work during his stint as GM.

The only thing I have to say about hockey is when the games are held at B.C. Place, when the game lets out it really botches up cruising since it seems to happen around 11pm.

My opinion of Biran Burke is he has been extremely lucky since his arrival in Van. He just alway is sticking his foot in his mouth and has comes out on the lucky side.....
Bure trade for Jovo,Weeks, & Gange.......(looking at it now Van won that one cause Bure is done.) but remember what burke said "Weeks is the Goalie of our futuer."
"Gange was the key to the deal...if we didn't get him we wouldn't have done the deal."........he played what 8 games (guessing) and retired quietly.
Then he sticks his neck out and trades for the twins ......wich luckily now .....3 years later is begining to look like a brilliant move.
When he first arrived someone asked him in an interview if he was going to try to get Linden back since Big Bad Keenan traded him away and he said absolutely not ......then he trades for Linden ?? years later and says it was a project he has been working on since his arrival in Van because the organization knows how much Linden means to the team and city blah blah blah....... it was a move to purely put some asses in seats......but now luckily it also looks like a good move.
I am a big Canuck fan and am glad to see the way they are playing.........a lot of people give Burke too much credit (IMHO)
I think he is just very LUCKY!

I think any good general manager requires a certain amount of good luck to look good. The are so many uncertainties that any deal has the potential of making the general manager look like a genius or a buffoon. Sure fact that Pavel Bure has been injured so much and Jovonoski has played so well makes Burke look pretty good. In most cases general manager can't predict which players are going receive career shortening or ending injuries so they all must depend on a certain amount of luck.

Drafting players also involves luck for all GMs. Young players may receive injuries that halt their progress. Some players never achieve their potential while others exceed all reasonable expectations. You can say Pat Quinn had a lot of luck in assembling the 1994 Stanley Cup team, but he had his share of bad luck as well. In hindsight the fact he drafted Petr Nedved instead of Jaromir Jagr looks pretty bad, but its impossible to accurately predict how good a player some 18 year old kid will become.

The fact that Brian Burke told the media he had no intention of going after Trevor Linden then saying the opposite after he got him was smart if you ask me. Brian Burke knew what type of player Linden was and knew how popular he would be with the fans, but if he had of made a public announcement that he wanted Linden back it would have backed him into a corner. The cost of acquiring Linden would have gone up if Washington had though Burke really coveted him.

Considering the fact Brian Burke has managed to put together such a competative team on a limited budget shows he is a pretty talented GM. Far more talented than the GMs of teams like Colorado, New York Rangers, Detroit, etc who think all proper management requires is throwing truckloads of money at every top free agent that comes on the market.

Absolutely agree with you on the budget aspect ......it just drives me freakin nuts to see him talk from his mouth and ass at the same time.
As for Linden the only reason Burke got him back was because Montreal and NYI both were paying a portion of his contract and it put asses in the seats, now he has taken a pay cut to stay with the Van. When Keenan traded him away as Part of the Bertuzzi deal he looked to be about finished. Having said that...... I am glad to have Linden back for many different reasons but more glad to see he has changed his game and playing like he can.

Dave Gagne - In his prime he was a point a game player with the North Stars. In the Bure trade he was basically a throw away player who was well past his prime. He was quickly discarded by the Canucks to make room on the roster for some of the clubs young prospects. I think he retired after his short stint with the Canucks.

Hey Adv, Gange is Dave Gagner.

LDL, who you calling Punky?

I'm not a Canucks fan by any stretch of the imagination but this thread was trying to point out the fact they are now a winning team, and have been for almost 3 years. Nothing was mentioned about a parade on Robson or horn-honking yahoos.

By the way, Burke is a genius and that's not from running the Canucks for 5 years. Consider his resume before hockey and then consider his NHL resume as a player and non-player. I think it's pretty self-explanitory.
