Purchased my first handgun today. I'm not a huge gun nut, but I've been thinking about buying one for a while now.

The likelihood of home invasion is low, but the Vancouver area is an earthquake zone. History has shown Canadians won't be as civilized as the Japanese when disaster strikes.

Protection from civil disorder. My aunt lived through the Montreal ice storm, and she said society broke down with people stealing anything that wasn't nailed down. People with generators and food had those things stolen by criminals.

Shotgun is probably the best for home defense, but if a natural disaster strikes and I have to move around for whatever reason, i.e. medical need, food and water exhausted, it is a lot easier to carry around as it just sits in your holster.

What an incredibly stupid idea. Any societal breakdown in a crisis will be temporary and localized. So, you get frightened and shoot a few people. Maybe you kill someone trying to steal a generator. Do you really think that will work as justification? Guns are often used against their owners, too.

Temporary disruption like the blackout that happened in Eastern Canada, which I lived through in Toronto, was not localized. Didn't need to worry too much because it only lasted for about 48 hours. Didn't have to do anything but go home and lock the door. A natural disaster like an earthquake or another ice storm like that in Montreal is not temporary, or localized.

The presence of a firearm is often enough to deter people. Don't have to shoot everyone you see. That would be crazy.

You have a right to defend your property. There was a Surrey man who discharged his firearm in the air because the Surrey RCMP showed up in plain clothes and didn't properly identify themselves earlier this year. The RCMP arrested him, but charges were not approved by the courts.

What kind of gun is it? I'm looking to buy one but they don't come cheap!
I think they're a must for the zombie apocalypse

You have to get an ATC to go to the range and back for restricted firearms. I would not be carrying concealed. Trust me, if there's a natural disaster, the police would not be bothering with a licensed holder carrying for protection. They'd be going after the thieves if they even were able to make it to work.

honestly, good for your brother, but I wouldn't recommend people fight back when someone has a gun... that's just silly... not everyone can take out an armed man... and not everyone should think they can differentiate between a pellet gun and a real gun... just a word to the wise ;)

Trust me, in Canada if there was a natural disaster and cops saw you out packing a weapon, they'd take you down before any number of thieves.

It's a glock style semi auto pistol. Before you can buy one, you need to be a member of a range and have written the exam for the Possession and Acquisition license for restricted and non restricted firearms.

If you say so. Me? I go another way. Two words:

Ballpeen hammer. Simple. Running silent. Running fast.
Easy to carry, easy to conceal, easy to use. In the right hands - deadly.

One quick shot to the temple - done. You'll never see me coming - from the darkness.....

I come in peace... But when the law breaks down?

I will be ready.

not sure if that was directed at me because I asked, but if it was, that's cute. I asked what kind as in sig? cz? who's it made by etc. and I know, I have my PAL for both restricted and non restricted, and I'm aware that you need to be part of a gun club (not necessarily a range). I'm hoping to purchase a shadow cz 9mm by the fall.

You can kill someone with a sharpened piece of plexiglass.

Time and distance are very important. My purpose for having one is for self defense. I have no reason to go sneaking up on someone. Not sure why you're looking to sneak up on people in the dark.

The whole concept of a weapon for when society breaks down is simply crazy. I completely agree with Uncleg on that. Even the police know that a firearm isn't going to stop a rioting crowd before you run out of bullets.

If you are the house that looks like it has food and there are a couple of hundred people that want that food, you aren't going to be able to kill all of them before they kill you.

It's much better to not look like the house that has food.

We deliberately make it hard to get a PAL(prohibited) and an ATC-3, you need both to carry a concealed firearm. If you have a PAL(prohibited) and an ATC, you must store the weapon at the range. A weapon that is locked in the gun safe at the range isn't going to be much good to a person if civilization falls apart.
How do you make it look like a house that doesn't have food? According to my Aunt who was in Montreal, there were no mobs coming around trying to steal your food, but there were groups of people (criminals trying to make a buck) who would come on to your property or stop you in the street who would tell you they were taking your generator, firewood or food.

If you have an ATT, you are allowed to keep your firearm at home and transport it to the range and back. Not too many ranges house firearms for you.

It surprises me that people are shocked by poorboy's comment that he must be prepared for civil unrest in the case of an emergency. HeLLO? Where were you guys all for the Stanley Cup Final? That wasn't even an emergency and look how people acted. The fact of the matter is, when society loses it's structure, for a few hours or a few weeks, there are bound to be people acting like fools and fucking shit up. I'd rather have the means to protect myself!

niice gun! how much did it set you back if you don't mind me asking?
I'm not going to lie, I want the shadow because it's a little girly. It's got lots of little accessories that I won't ever use, but hey, I AM a girl, and if I can accessorize something I'll buy it. ALSO going to be highlighting it with pink because I can :p

Yes and someone with a gun during the riots, shooting the rioters, would have made it way way better.
