I have been told of a rash of banning and denied entry at US border crossings, both at the airport and on land.

It's becoming a bit of a cycle, they get the contents of a phone or a laptop from a known SP or client who is banned while trying to cross, and all the phone numbers, names, ads, even Facebook, twitter and Instagram accounts are thoroughly searched. Other SPs are flagged, either by phone number or real name if they can find it. This leads to more people getting caught and the database of info grows from there.

Travel smart. Wipe your phones of anything incriminating, same for your laptops & tablets, wipe browser histories. I am sure some of the more tech savvy members can add to the suggestions. Guys, this impacts you too, imagine having to explain to your long-time regular that US Border Services has her real name and phone number from your phone, it wouldn't be pretty.

Ladies, it's even more vital if you are working in the USA, make sure you have your story straight and your IT stuff set up correctly.

This is a public service announcement only, I will not name names or share any personal info.

How about our American friends who visit Canada to pursue their hobby? I wonder if they get looked at differently. I know there are some and I wonder what they have to say.

People forget just how many places stuff is stored now. There is no such thing as wiping a computer or phone anymore. No matter what you do, the info is still there. I bought a new iPhone for a friend. Restored it from the iCloud in a few minutes. By default iPhones backup to your Apple Cloud account. The same happens with computers. Be it Apple or Microsoft OS, you have a backup attached to your account.

Best security is to set up a Cloud account and log in with a burner once you are over the border. Lose the burner before returning to Canada. Physically destroy the burner before discarding it. Many laptops are inexpensive enough to be treated as a burner also if you have big clumsy fingers like me.

You don't want to take a working cellphone or laptop over the border. It adds time to you clearing customs and gives too much data to power tripping border agents.

Canada guys go for the States for p4p? Its very risky and costly in the States. I live in States and every few months just head to Tijuana for my fill. No risks, cheap, you can even tell the guards on the US side you just went to enjoy the bar district. They don't care you just went to get your rocks off.

I've only been 'detained' a couple of times, (maybe 3 or 4), they go through everything in your car...so keeping the bare minimum and being neat/tidy I think may help in their process. I keep my phone on my body and answer all questions clearly with the least amount of 'words' as possible. I think they want to see you sweat/squirm, so I do neither

Well said. It is exceedingly difficult to truly hide yourself in this digital world. Privacy is non existent. I just finished Kevin Mitnick's Book - The Art of Invisibility and even he says it's increasingly difficult to stay off the grid. Mitnick = Legendary Hacker, on the run from FBI for years.

The real issue is the US border and government shitting on the US constitution. The little game they play is that it's to "stop terrorism" and this is fucking bullshit. Listening to my phone calls or reading my texts is not stopping terrorism. It's simply spying on me. Unfortunate, the citizens of the USA don't see to give one single fuck about it. They will after it's too late. The problem with using new phones, wiping, etc is that only raises the eyebrows of the Feds. So what DO you have to hide. Your right to privacy isn't an answer. You're guilty until proven innocent.

/end of rant.
Actually, I was asked why no electronics last time I flew down. My answer "too much trouble to bring them with me" It's the same as not carrying a pocket knife and buying toothpaste, etc when I get to the hotel. It delays you getting through customs if you have too much stuff with you. Of course, I'm a guy. I can use a bar of Zest for showering, washing my hair and shaving. Everything that I need with me fits in a backpack that can be carried onto the plane.

I shop at Costco and they sell unlocked Samsung & Acer phones at reasonable prices. You can buy one there, have that as your border crossing phone only and leave your main phone at home.

All of this talk and no suggestions about exactly what (particularly on your phone) they're looking for at the borders?

You give them your password, they open your phone, and what types of things are they interested in finding there???

From what I gather, CBA searches your phone and electronic devices for emails and text messages to make sure you're not crossing to work, seek employment, trafficking and importing. Browsing history. Also, your image galleries for incriminating images such as child pornography, arms etc....
I watch a lot of Border Security.

Has anyone reading this had their computers searched when crossing the border? I have crossed dozens of times over the years, carrying one or more computers. I cross via air, or at land borders. Vehicles have been searched a couple of times, but never has any US border services agent looked at the files on my computer. I have never been asked to hand over a computer or give them a password.

They know that I sometimes work in the US, because my expired work visas show up in their computers. Usually when I cross, they will ask if I'm going to the US to work. If I say no, they just let me go through, no hassle. If I do intend to work in the US, I'm very careful about having all the right paperwork, and so long as I do, no hassle.

I don't deny that they sometimes want to look into people's computers, but does it really happen as frequently as is implied in this thread?

I think the new rise of security is because of Trump's Executive Order.

Anyone been down to the States for work since then and can report back? My earliest engagement down there is in the summer time...

It is rarely requested MissingOne. They would only go to such lengths if they feel the person in secondary gives them a strong reason to.
And even getting to secondary inspection takes some high suspicion, frequent crossings or visits to known drug producing countries.

A friend did a quick trip down to the US for work recently. He reported that the border crossings both ways were fast and easy.

I have traveled to the USA 9 times so far in 2017.
3 times in the past month alone.
They have yet to look at my phone or computer.
The furthest it has ever gone at a border crossing was about 12 years ago they searched my car.
Underside to with mirrors.
Took the spare tire out of the trunk.
Looked under the seats and under the hood.
I was there probably 20 minutes.
Plus 2 minutes to put the spare tire etc back in my car.
And i cross very regularly.
Some people look nervous and I think they get searched regularly for looking guilty.

I get inspected almost every time.......
I usually lose some stray ammunition, and a knife or two that have rolled under my seat, and got overlooked.
With my military record, they don't hassle me much after the strip search, and viewing my battle scars.
I always ask...." Why do you always pull me over?"
They inform me that I just have one of those faces .......that looks like it needs further inspection.
If you wanna breeze through US customs, don't have me sitting in your passenger seat.

Just a note (speaking professionally) on your smart phone, computer, etc. Removing apps or even wiping your phone doesn't necessarily rid your phone of incriminating evidence. A rookie hacker can rebuild your phone using free tools found on the internet. Border Services employs security specialists and if you're going to imagine you can bypass their security you're fooling yourself. As for your computer, deleting something doesn't delete it. You need to write over the space on your drive repeatedly and even then forensics can pull the data. And, if you are traveling to the United States, do remember that Trump changed the rules so that ISP's could sell your data to the highest bidder. Imagine how that plays when some Fed shows up wanting data?

Welcome to Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Four.
While true, this is not something they can do while you stand in line. It requires them to confiscate your phone.

Incidentally one easy place to find all your phone contents is on a computer or laptop if, say, it's an iPhone and you ever sync'ed with iTunes there. The backup is buried in your user directory and by default it's not even encrypted. Super easy to find if you know the path, though.

When I go I delete my ads, pause my website & don't bring my work phone. Another thing they will look for is condoms, sex toys & lingerie. I know some girls have gotten banned when customs went through their suitcase and discovered these items. Minimize packing these and buy when you get to your destination!
