Suffering from a terrible case of "Single Supplementitis"

Not sure if any of you guys or girls have experienced the same, in your travel plans. A buddy of mine is heading for Cancun in a few weeks. He booked a month ago and is paying around $2300.00 taxes in for 1 week all-in, nice hotel, single to a room. I'm planning to meet him, so in my searches, online and at agencies, I find the same package discounted to 1268.00 plus taxes. When the booking is changed to reflect the "single supplement"(which I understand) the price reverts back to $2100.00 plus taxes. My only reaction was, "talk about getting hosed". The travel agents I saw reacted the same, but said there is no option. My feelings are it is not the money, since I'd be happier to pay an extra few hundred and take someone for free, but give me some sort of break if you are discounting it anyway. I did consider abandoning those plans and going to Cabo at the Riu, but my buddy is great to party with and creates a following wherever he goes so I know it will be an awesome week. If I wasn't suffering from vacation deprivation, I'd hold off. Any comments probably won't fix the "single supplementitis" this time but for the future, what packages, tour co's etc, acknowledge the large single population out there? Sure one option is finding a travel buddy but, hell, everyone my age is still raising families, in and out of relationships, tied up with fulltime work and needs to book holidays 6 months in advance, or just plain can't afford it.

You sound like you need the holiday anyway, so go for it.

Single vacationers have been discriminated against for as long as there have been vacation packages. And soon, if the Conservatives go through with their ridiculous plan that will allow couples to income split, we will be further discriminated against in the world of taxes (we already are, hence the "further"). But no matter how much it bites to be single, it bites even worse to be not single. :)

I have been going to Mexico for 15 years. The packages are a ripoff for 1 or 3 travellers, ie you are gonna pay for the room several times. If you have the time to plan, you are far better off to rent a condo/casita/hacienda, depending on number of travellers. 1 example would be - 1 bdrm condo @ $1,000/wk plus airfare of $600-900/person. You still have meals and booze, but they are minor expenses in Mexico. In fact, I have rented condo with pool, kitchenette, etc for $1,500 for two weeks and bought the airfare for less than $500. Pretty cheap vacation, and you might want to spend some of your savings on some latin SP's.

Super idea! However my cat is male. Neutered, but still male. Has the government approved human/animal same sex marriage yet? And if not, why not?? :D

Sorry, grav; but you can't do that. Marriage is defined as being between "one man and one woman". Looks like you and Roofus miss out. ;)

Well guys it has eased my disgust to know I'm not the only one who has felt discriminated against, so what the hell. On the positive side, JustAGuy, has a good point. It used to cost a lot more when I was paying for a lot more people than myself alone. Now that there is "just me", it is substancially less as a total cost. Any ideas on Cancun pooning?
AlongCameJohn I'll probably consider your suggestion for the future.

Quarter Mile'r, Mopar's do rule, and so does anything with the hemispherical shape. Thanks for the comment.

On the income splitting, yeh what a drag, now that I would actually worry about splitting income, I"m seriously single. Oh well I'll apply JustAGuy's theory to this dilemna also.

I thought my intent for posting, and I'm relatively new at this, was to encourage comments about the drastic difference in cost of single versus double occupancy, and to solicit comments on that subject. I am well aware of all the packages available ranging from $700.00/week pp double occupancy. Trust me I spent countless hours checking and double checking.
As for the needless banter, my day is great, so I have no interest in responding.
Happy to know though, that others reflect my sentiment and have a reasonable calm approach to what we are attempting to accomplish with this medium of communication.

Unfortuately I think you will pay through the nose for any SP's...but if you are not butt-ugly and don't act like you are on spring break I bet you could do well with the holidaying Mexican girls. How's your Spanish?

Out of all the Latin and S. American countries I've visited Mexico is by far the most expensive place to poon with the lowest quality of fat ugly jaded whores.

If you're not stuck on Mexico I can suggest many other destinations where you don't actually have to eat at five star hotels and restaurants to not get Montezuma's revenge and while you're at it you can bang an endless supply of 18 yo grade A chicas for under $75 for all night.

As far as the single supplement bullshit is involved yes its the norm with all packaged holidays in resorts. Typically this happens because the greedy tour operators usually have a block of rooms booked with a certain bunch of hotels whether they fill them or not. They also have a certain profit margin that they want to achieve and as a result they will ding you to compensate for not having a second person with you.

I can't see the point of this post other than that you're an idiot ;) Last I checked you can't find any decent (5 star plus) all inclusives in the Cancun / Mayan Riviera area for under 1900 plus taxes of around $200-300.

They have those?!? Damn, I've gotta get my hands on a bottle of them, and then find some way to slip them to a few people... ;)
