    To boil or not to boil: that is the question.

    So, it's been about a week since the boil water advisory was issued. The food service industry seems to have adjusted quite well, and the initial panic and price gouging for bottled water has subsided. The water itself is looking more or less normal, though we're told the turbidity in the Seymour Reservoir is as still about three times the acceptable level. There have been no reports of E. Coli or any other nasty bacteria in our drinking water other than a sample at UBC that was taken beside a composting facility and is believed to be a false positive.

    Personally, I think the urgency of the situation is being exaggerated, and have decided to revert to using our municipal water straight from the tap. Anyone else gone that route, or am I just crazy?

    if your immune system is okay and your tummy doesn't get upset go for it ...

    but i would just continue drinking bottled water until the situation clears.

    locally our water has been 'cleared' but when i made coffee with it,
    it tasted like old sneakers ... bleach!

    back to bottled stuff.

    I've gone back to washing dishes and brushing my teeth using tap water but I still drink bottled water.

    I guess it depends on what part of the city you live. My office has brown water still but my home is pretty much back to normal.

    ahh just slam it back

    do it quick and u won't taste a thing this is nothing in comparison to other countries and people who would die for this water... we dont have to dig for hours in a mud hole to find it!! and it will go back to normal.. it's not going to kill us

    No it may not kill you, but it may lead to some GI issues that will leave you on the toilet more than you may wish.

    if I was drinking a bundle I'm sure!!! lol

    but Im not, I still boil it and I dont take long relaxing bubble baths in the water.. in fact I filled up the tub took a look at the water and took the plug out, and after the water was drained there was left over ick in the tub, but I have brushed teeth, washed vegetables, and all the other little stuff!! this is far from mexico... I survived that

    That's a healthy attitude One thing all coffe drinkers may consider is that most coffee makers in resturants DON"t boil water they just heat it. Found that one out when we were on a boil notice. When out for lunch and we ask the waitress if they boiled the water for the coffee. She said "its whatever the coffee maker does" - talk about a liability issue.

    where to start with this …

    water treatment is done by the GVRD, which includes the city of vancouver, but the city of vancouver itself does not provide water treatment.

    UV disinfection is presently not used by the GVRD.

    there are 3 sources of water in the GVRD.

    the coquitlam watershed is treated with ozone and provides 20% of the regions water.

    the capilano watershed is chlorinated and provides 40% of the regions water.

    the seymour watershed is chlorinated and provides 40% of the regions water.

    presently there is a new water treatment plant under construction for the seymour and capilano watersheds.

    this new facility will treat the water by a combination of: filtering; UV disinfection; and chlorination.

    the filtration and UV processes will reduce the amount of chlorine required but will not eliminate it.

    this facility is scheduled to go on stream in 2008.

    Just boil your water to be safe. It still lookskinda icky but just make sure you dont' have any cold sores in your mouth..
