Aeroplan has to be the absolute, total worst piece of shit program existing anywhere on the planet. They have fucked up orders for merchandise, they have fucked up travel plans and today the site isn't even responding to a log in request. In the past when I wanted to complain - guess what - there is no place to register a complaint. There used to be a government ombudsman, (former NHL ref), but that was discontinued a few years back after he collected a shit load of complaints against Air Canada. If you send a complaint to their site you get back a message saying they won't respond. Ass wipes. I wouldn't fly on them if I didn't have to. In fact, I always book other airlines when there is a choice. I hate those bastards.

so why bother with it?

the program originally had some merit, but quickly became a fast
way for everyone to charge more for less but offer 'airmiles' so
you felt better for taking one up the ass ...

i hate standing in line which some dumb cunt has to whip out 15
fucking 'aeroplan, points plan etc' cards and waste more of my time
in a line up ...

the sooner aeroplan and air canada crash and burn the better.

I'm not bothering any more, just trying to redeem the points I earned.

CT, if all else fails, you can exchange your Aeroplan points for eBay anything points at www.points.com, which is what I did with mine.

They skim off a commission obviously, but it's not too bad.

LOL

After having spent 5 miserable years working for Air Canada, I have zero regrets about leaving such a f**ked up company.. Whenever I travel, I don`t even check any AC flights, I will never give them a penny of my money.. They do not value their clients or their employees.. I`ll put my money elsewhere.. I`m not kidding, I would actually pay more if I had to (I haven`t), just to not book with them! :D

As far as Aeroplan... if you want to redeem your points, be prepared to travel on a monday or tuesday, at an unbelievably inconvenient time, with crazy connections and stop over times.
Oh.. and make sure to book 11 months ahead of time... then you should be fine!

Speaking of Aeroplan I just redeemed 33,000 miles for a gift card worth 250 Canadian dollars. It went well, I got my card within a week and I was able to use it in the US no problems.

My only experience has been on their HK-Van flights.

Upgrades

I agree that AC is one of the worst airlines out there - but some member of the Star Alliance team are pretty good.

While I have never tried to arrange for a flight entirely on points (and I can only imagine that would be a nightmare - especially on AC), I utilize my points for upgrades all the time.

You will have the most success by calling a day or so before and seeing if business/first class/premium business class are available with points.

If you arrive early enough at the airport, you may also get the upgrade there. I have found it to be 50/50 for same day upgrades on international flights - including those with premium business class in which you get a full bed to sleep in rather than just a larger seat.

Just get the miles on Aeroplan and use them on Star Alliance, AC may suck ass but they got great partners.

I've had nothing but good service from Aeroplan. I guess it's all about perception.

They've put a limit on redemptions, but that is only catching up with the others who were doing so all along. Typically, others cap redemptions to three years, after which the points automatically expire. In fact Air Canada's points will now expire "if" the member does not show any activity (of any kind) in his/her account. There are thousands of dormant accounts in the AP system, and this change will clear those out.

As for the quality of the plan, Aeroplan has always been rated by consumers as one of the best in the world, earning the number one status just a few years back. Now that they have modified the plan, opinions may change, but the fundamentals are still good.
