Is Downton a ghost town?

With most office people working from home and only essential services open, is downtown a ghost town? Hardly ever go down there and just wondering how it is. Do people still walk their dog down there? People walking around the blocks? Or do you see a bunch of people ignoring social distance from your window?

When I’ve been downtown lately it’s been pretty much a ghost town. And most times I’ve been on the train I’ve been alone.
And the way those pigeons at Granville & West Georgia were acting the last time I passed by that intersection reminded me of Alfred Hitchcock’s Birds

The only time I’ve seen people out and about ignoring social distancing are in the pictures from the beach that are all over the news.

Another thing the hungry birds made me think of...how will those who live paycheck to paycheck that have been recently forced out of work feed themselves soon?

the food bank was already struggling to feed those in need before Covid-19. Parliament is still negotiating the funding Justin promised everyone. And even then, many people who had full time jobs still struggled to make ends meet in metro Vancouver. EI pays much less.

Even if rent, credit card bills, etc get frozen for a time being, we all still need to eventually pay our bills.

I wouldn’t say it’s like a ghost town, but it’s quite apparent nonetheless. Stanley Park and English Bay were busy up until yesterday when the weather changed and the parks board blocked off most parking, ball courts, playgrounds etc. Waterfront is dead aside from the odd jogger, cyclist or group of tourists. Davie and lower Robson still active with all their takeout friendly restaurants open, but not so much for Granville. Most non food, booze, weed or convenience stores are all closed up so most foot and vehicle traffic is locals or delivery people. Hastings and Gastown are definitely ghost town adjacent, except for all the street people. All the trendy restaurants and stores down there are closed so no hipsters just street people from Carral to Gore. Super crowded and messier than usual. There’s barely any traffic and parking spaces galore lol. Restricted turns and U turns don’t seem to affect anyone. If you plan on going to have a look for yourself, I highly recommend using a bathroom beforehand because your options will be limited.

Apparently it is the case in Revelstoke. No skiers/snowboarders/ski-doo'ers as out of town tourists pouring money into the local economy are not there.I can just imagine how bleak it is in that shithole because unless you are a professional like a lawyer/doctor/nurse etc or you have a nice cushy union job with any branch of government you are pretty much fucked. Not that Revelstoke is overrun with Covid 19 cases but the conditions pretty much prohibit any kind of mass participation.

B.C. will take a real hit because of its reliance on the tourism industry. Even if this pandemic gets sorted out soon, it will basically be a lost tourist season. In a place like Penticton, so many of the festivals and events planned for spring/summer have already been cancelled. The Ironman Canada triathlon has returned for this year in August but even that is in peril now, though not cancelled as of this moment.

The interesting thing about the food bank is that about 20% of the clients dropped off when it became a threat to go out. so doesn't that suggest that a good part of that percentage can afford to buy?

Wanna see some real desolation? Take a spin down to the Peace Arch border crossing... 5 minute drive of nothingness from the 14th Ave roundabout on the way down and not a soul until the 16th Ave ramps on the way back.

Somebody forgot to tell that bunch along Hastings near Main about what's going on. If you ride the R5 bus through, you'll see what I mean.

Not as a ghost town as there has been quite a few people & traffic. It's more like a holiday, like you'ld see on Christmas day.

People are still out walking their dog & the vast majority of walkers are keeping a good distance apart (practicing "social distancing").

All but a few businesses, stores, & such are closed, many with signs on their windows..."temporarily closed due to COVID-19" kinda stuff. Those that are open have reduced their hours & are relatively short of customers.

Last time I grinded gear and did what I do when the roads were this empty was when after the planes crashed on 9/11.Cant believe the low flow of traffic right now.It is I would say a week that I am not yelling out verbal insults towards idiot drivers though I did see an idiot do an illegal U turn today over a double solid yellow and my thought was "where is the cop?"
