Angry incrediby bad experience with taxi driver today

Was coming home from my trip to Thailand. Wanted to use Uber but could not locate the pick up point at the airport, so used a cab.

Right from the beginning things were off. He opened the trunk and didn't help with my luggage. I put it in myself. As I approached to driver side rear door, he barked "other side" and pointed to the passenger side rear door. I'm thinking he thinks I have Corona virus and wants me as far from him as possible.

He asks bluntly, "Where did you go?" I say "Thailand." "Where are you from?" "I'm Japanese."

A while later, he says, "You're paying cash!" I say, "huh"? "CASH!" I don't want to make a big deal out of it so I say, "Whatever works for you, cash is okay with me."

He then asks where I live. I say Surrey. He says, "Then why I am I driving you to Richmond?" I said, "I parked my car there." He then went on to complain that this was a short ride and that he will have to deal with it.

When we arrived, he didn't tell me how much. I asked about the meter and he said that it was a flat rate, so the meter wasn't on. I asked how much, and he said $25. I know this is a rip off. It's supposed to be $20.

The guy was Indian and he was so fucking rude and shady. Ruined my return to Canada big time.

You only paid 25 bucks for a cab ride and you’re whining about it? Time to suck it up I would say.

I don't know if I am just lucky, but more than 90% of my taxi/collectivo/tuktuk/tricycle/jeepney experiences around the world are great! I tend to think that the complainers are more often just the kind of people that don't respect service industry workers, so there shitty experience is more a reflection of their own personality and how they interact with people.

Side note - unless you have some kind of physical challenge, you should be able to put your own bag in the trunk, I do it all the time, and a driver is just that, they aren't your porter.

Thing that bothers me mostid if driver is on the phone the whole journey. Worse if it's a foreign language.

It got so bad, that I warned drivers when we started, that I wouldn't tolerate it, and I'd demand to be let out, and refuse to pay if they goto their phone.

It's not the money that matters, but the fact that he was so rude. Overcharging me $5 is just another straw on the camel's back.

Absolutely wrong on this one. I am very generous and understanding, and go out of my way to treat service workers with the utomost respect since I worked in these jobs for many years. I greet them, always make eye contact, and say thanks, have a nice day, etc. I tip extremely generously especially to those who make the least such as hotel workers.

However, I have had many rude encounters with people who have zero customer service skills, and this cab driver was one of them.

As for the baggage, in the past almost every single driver has offered to help me. I end up putting it in myself anyway, but this guy didn't even offer. I think most cab drivers do offer to help load your luggage. But that is just one of the many things that he did that made the trip unpleasant.

Same exact thing happned to me on my last taxi ride. The guy was literally yelling on his phone the entire trip in a foreign language. I brought it up at the end of the trip, and he apologized.

LOL are you serious? You're the reason why cab drivers keep getting away with shit attitude and terrible service. It clearly wasn't just about the money in this case. He was being discriminated against. It's no wonder they're suing Uber and Lyft - these companies are a huge threat to their livelihood and "fixed rates".

Yes, he overcharged me and took advantage of me. The $5 extra is nothing to me, but it's about the principle. The guy treated me like shit, maybe because of my race. My experiences with Uber are much better.

I get the feeling this might be privilege speaking. I've been ripped off, misdirected and mistreated 90% of my rides with cabs. That's *if* they decide to pick me up. There's no guarantee of that no matter how far ahead you schedule. To take it a step further, go talk to some of the ladies in your life about their Vancouver taxi experience and see if you can find one that doesn't have a sketchy story about unwanted advances, feeling unsafe about giving them their home addresses, or just plan over the top being rude.

LOL! Airport Cab drivers are like the $500 hookers that get ticked off you only want the lowest cost option and they are losing out on a “good” client by wasting their valuable time with you.

Those are the guys you turn on your cell phone video recorder, phone up an Uber during your trip to pick you up from the cab after a $5 ride and say you are going to Abbotsford.

I can't remember the last time I took a cab and didn't have to listen to the driver chat loudly on their phone, or play their horrible music loud. Very rarely are they thankful for a tip, and they are not the friendliest to pedestrians at crosswalks. When I hear them complain about Uber and Lyft, the word Karma comes to mind.

    $25 to Richmond? ...

OK, I checked and in here are the rates for July 2019 onwards.

    https://www.ptboard.bc.ca/documents/...Rates-Rule.pdf

There's both a list (with additional rules) and a map.

This isn't hidden info; should be available at the airport somewhere near the cabs.

I've encountered so many rude taxi drivers that it's the main reason I do not support the taxis and prefer Uber or Lyft.

One argued over a preferred route to take to the N Shore. Whatever, it effected his tip.

Another pulled over for me to go to an ATM since he wanted cash and no cards.

Rating the drivers and customers on Uber and Lyft is a great idea. Taxi's would benefit by keeping their rude drivers in line.
