The University of Alberta's vice-president of university relations has resigned over the school's "beefier barley" billboards, which were slammed as promoting climate change.

"The messaging on the ad called the reputation of the University of Alberta and its extensive research on climate change into question," vice-president of university relations Jacqui Tam said in an announcement posted Sunday.

"As Vice-President (University Relations), I apologize for this and take responsibility. In the best interests of the institution, I am announcing my departure from the University of Alberta, effective immediately."

The "beefier barley" billboards, displayed at four locations in Edmonton and Calgary, read, "Climate change will boost Alberta's barley yield with less water, feeding more cattle."

The billboard is part of Truth Matters, a larger advertising campaign from the university, highlighting research "that tackles today's complex challenges, and to encourage discussion," Tam said in an earlier statement posted Thursday after concerns were raised by the public, students and faculty members.
Climate protests

Posts on social media slammed the ad as a pro-climate change billboard from the U of A, also criticizing the timing of the billboards, as thousands of climate activists took to Edmonton's streets to join the Global Climate Strike on Friday.

The billboard also caused concern among the university's faculty of science about the representation of scientific research.

"It is unfortunate that the findings of a 2017 peer-reviewed scientific study have been taken out of context with a single statement on a billboard and framed to suggest support for climate change," wrote Dean of Science Matina Kalcounis-Rueppell in a statement Friday.

"There are risks associated with taking scientific results out of context, particularly in an age of science skepticism."

The university will pull the ad as soon as possible, Tam's statement said.

University of Alberta president David Turpin will address the resignation Sunday evening, a spokesperson told CBC News.

Not my investigative reporting but that of the National Post.

Pretty fucked up IMO.

Storm Rider, what's your message here? The guy is agreeing with climate change. He's just saying Alberta can cash in on it. I thought you didn't believe in climate change? So wouldn't that still make the billboards a waste of money and the guy stupid? Do you think he shouldn't resign?

He speaks out how he did so and gets some pushback by the Leftist environmental nutjobs and he got chucked under the bus for what would be considered "free speach".This guy was forced to resign.Something as life changing does not happen in the span of a few days.

Dear God, this is what it has come to! Even George Orwell would find it hard to believe and Stalin would applaud. I reviewed several news reports of Jacqui Tam's resignation. Not one suggested that the message of the billboard was wrong, untrue, inaccurate or unscientific. Yes, it's perfectly true but you can't say that. In fact, it just cost you your job. Really? That bad? If I had a kid looking for a university right now, that would be U of A right off the list. Free speech, exchange of ideas, independent thinking....nah, we don't tolerate that any more. I'm thinking religion and Salem witch trials. We haven't really made any progress, have we?

Usually universities fire people who break their rules of conduct. Part of that conduct is not to comment on "hot potato items" like climate change.....

The sign slogan itself is extremely vague and can be considered poor science too. How are you growing more barley with less water?

Its still not clear whether climate change will bring more water or less water in local areas.

Theoretically warmer air can hold more water vapour... and hence more water and when it rains or snows (water vapour cools down and then precipatates).

As the topic title is Climate Change stupidity.....

AOC claims that Miami will not exist in a couple of years due to sea levels rising.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/MhteoMQ_LPI" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Meanwhile:

https://www.wsj.com/articles/dwyane-wade-asks-32-5-million-for-miami-beach-home-11568830527

I guess no one told Dwayne Wade or his realtor about "rising sea levels" in Florida as he puts his waterfront Miami Beach property on the market. You would think if AOC was correct or there was any hint of truth to it then there would be panic selling at cutrate pricing as desperate home owners tried to cut their losses and head for higher ground. But...no lets go for a $12 million dollar profit over 9 years.

Also: More prominent climate change activists showing no fear of rising sea levels despite their proclamations to the contrary.

"A senior U.N. environmental official says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000. Coastal flooding and crop failures would create an exodus of 'eco-refugees', threatening political chaos." That was in 1989.

19 years past that deadline, who ya gonna believe? Well, we got the political chaos, n'est-ce pas? but we're still waiting for the apocalypse.

Ms Tam made a nimrod move in authorizing those billboards. The billboards had the U of A crest and were not sufficiently anti-climate-change.

The statement on the billboards about Alberta's $500mil/year barley agri-industry was technically true. It just didn't tow the line.

Universities and governments have a low tolerance for not sticking to their official positions. Ms Tam paid with her job.

So what is wrong with growing more barley with less water? Seems like a win-win to me. More barley will even help to sequester more carbon.

Seems pretty smart to me too.Since the evil CO2 that brings all plants/tree etc life and in return they give us oxygen so that we may make CO2 for them.

As for the CO2 level that went from 260 parts per million to 370 parts per million....consider this....take 1 MILLION white marbles and lay them flat in say a rectangular shape and contained....remove 370 white marbles and replace them with black ones.....put them anywhere you want....all over the place or in one single blob type of thing. The rest of those 1 MILLION white marbles are going to make your 370 parts per million not matter.

Do the math based on the parts per million as in a percentage of the atmosphere....CO2 does not have jack shit for real estate in that department.....do the math.Be sure to follow the money as well.

According to Al Gore the city of New York as well as New Orleans were supposed to be underwater 10 year+ ago and the doom and gloom predictions go back to the 1970's.Climate Change is a sham. The climate on this planet has gone through cycles for 4.2 BILLION years and the climate has changed all that time.During one point millions of years ago Canada was considered a Tropical environment and it was at that time millions of years ago.

Yes climate change is happening, has happened, what you are not saying is the rate at which the climate is changing. That is alarming!

Warmer air holds more water vapour (moisture), hence lately more larger hurricanes, more rain, bigger snow storms, bigger floods in areas considered to be in the flood range of "every 100 years" . Floods wipe out the soil underneath, so if you want to grow crops, you need soil... Although there are studies that have shown you can grow plants without soil, it still takes water to grow plants. Early last century some people came up with a grain that could use reduced water, nothing since then that I have heard means they can grow barley with less water. So you climate negators pls don't complain when the insurance company increases your home insurance (yeah that has already happened the insurance companies raised you insurance after the Calgary Floods)

https://inspectapedia.com/hazmat/Carbon_Dioxide_Hazards.php This chart on this page tells you the toxicity of CO2.

Right now with the hockey stick graph, CO2 limits are increasing at an increasing rate. So as we humans are cutting down trees in the Amazon (trees which can convert the CO2 back into O2), we have a decreasing change of CO2 to O2. Humans are still putting CO2 into the atmosphere faster than it can be turned back into O2. Studies have shown that it takes mature trees to accomplish this, humans have a habit of cutting the tree just as it matures (50 to 70 years depending on species).

So as CO2 increases the O2 will decrease in the atmosphere. Any studies on how that affects the human body? The CO2 is a greenhouse gas that is helping to warm the temperature of the earth's atmosphere..... So far I think the average temp has gone up 1 degree. How much more water vapour can the air hold with another 1 degree rise in temp? More and more flooding will happen and bigger storms like hurricanes and winter snow storms....

Read the reference, it tells you how toxic CO2 can be at certain levels.... Ever feel drowsy in a lecture room, could be poor air quality/rise in CO2 in a room. But then again people will only see the facts they want to believe....

Outrageous purchase of Malthus and doomsday theories here.

Most scientists believe in climate change.

A large number of them don't believe it to be anthropogenic.

It's not a consensus, nor is it a hypothesis. It is a guess.

Anthropogenic = man made.

You bring up a fair point nightswhisper.

Climate change is a permanent feature of our planet. The Earth's climate is for sure changing but that doesn't mean its all at the hand of man.

I'd be impressed if climate change activists stopped talking about "climate change" and started talking about "man made climate change".

This is like putting up a billboard saying the funeral industry will benefit from a plague. Totally tone death and inappropriate given the climate crisis we are faced with.

The ice caps and permafrost are melting at great rate, the Amazon forest is burning at alarming rate. Extreme climate event is a result of warming global temperature which increases regional volatility.

Even a desert gets rain once in a while, you can't say you are not in a desert just because it is raining at the moment.

Using university money (I. E. her employer ) to put up a billboard is not free speech. She screwed up doing her job and took responsibility for it.
