Good job Trudeau.....so do you still you still admire China's "basic dictatorship"?

OTTAWA — The Chinese Embassy says it has suspended all Canadian meat exports in a dramatic escalation of its diplomatic dispute with Canada over the December arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver.

The latest Chinese move comes as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to depart Wednesday for the G20 leaders' summit, where he is expected to rely on U.S. President Donald Trump to raise the plight of two detained Canadians during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The embassy said in a statement to The Canadian Press on Tuesday that this latest move follows the detection of residue from a restricted feed additive called ractopamine by Chinese customs inspectors in a batch of Canadian pork products. The additive has permitted uses in Canada but is banned in China.

"The subsequent investigation revealed that the official veterinary health certificates attached to the batch of pork exported to China were counterfeit and the number of those forgery certificates was up to 188. The Canadian side believes that this incident is criminal offence," said the embassy statement.

"These forged certificates were sent to the Chinese regulatory authorities through Canadian official certificate notification channel, which reflects that the Canadian meat export supervision system exists obvious safety loopholes."

China is therefore taking "urgent preventive measures" to protect Chinese customers and has asked the Canadian government to suspend all meat export certificates, the embassy said.

"We hope the Canadian side would attach great importance to this incident, complete the investigation as soon as possible and take effective measures to ensure the safety of food exported to China in a more responsible manner."

A spokeswoman for Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau has yet to comment on the report.

A report in the newspaper Journal de Quebec, which first reported the story, quotes a Montreal-based diplomat with the Chinese consulate-general as saying the ban is temporary.

China detained former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and Canadian entrepreneur Michael Spavor and sentenced another Canadian to death in an apparent attempt to pressure for Meng's release.

China has also stopped imports of Canadian canola and has suspended export permits for three pork producers.

"The Canadian Press"

Thus far canola growers are on a collision course for Destination Fucked.....added to the list as of today are ALL farmers/producers/companies that sell meat to China and that means ALL meat....beef/pork/seafood.The door has been shut and those on this side of it are on a collision course for Destination Fucked.

All of this with the Substitute Drama Teacher going to the G-20 for tomorrow.

Something tells me, storm rider, that in the flip side alternate universe where Trudeau said "screw you" to the US extradition demand and sided instead with China, you would not be singing his praises there for that move either.

We're caught in the middle. Piss off China and kowtow to the US, or piss off the US and kowtow to China. Either way the wronged party would be taking it out on us. It's not like Trump isn't tariff crazy.

Choose your poison.

I guess Storm Rider wants us to cave to the Chinese. Then they'd really respect us!

But at least these far-right guys are consistent. Little Andy Scheer also begged Trudeau to cave on NAFTA and accept anything Trump offered.

Scheer has fewer balls than Lance Armstrong.

Look left. Way left.
Trudeau has no balls! Obviously this woman is important to the Chinese authorities. Fight fire with fire. Accuse her of murder and set a date for her hanging unless they cease and desist. In the mean time, jail all Chinese Nationals and take their assets!

Counterfeit veterinary health certificates on Canadian meat products have to be dealt with.

The country that has produced more diseased animals in the world than any other country, is worried about some Canadian meat?

And your assessment is based on which BQA certificate ?
Maybe not so much with beef, but over the last 20 years they have killed billions of chickens and pigs due to disease outbreaks.
They are currently dealing with African Swine Fever, and at least one million pigs have died, and millions more have been killed to try to stem the outbreak.

It will be interesting if the Cons get in how the mood will change in the Lounge when Scheer starts stepping on his dick. It's not a matter of If but When given the number of times he has stumbled in front of the microphone.

storm rider, hopefully you are aware that the USA does not have an extradition treaty with China and this was the USA's only shot getting Meng Wanzhou while in transit in Canada. What if the allegations about her are true and she has been participating in fraudulent business practises by selling Hua Wei products to Iran while there were sanctions in effect?

No Prime Minister can decide which extradition cases Canada will support the extradition process or not.

The fact that Trump imposed sanctions on Iran has caused this situation, it was not anything Huawei was doing as a business. It’s the same as Apple doing business around the world.
My question is? If Trump say jump does the whole world have to follow his orders.
We shouldn't, and we don't follow Trump's orders. Canada's recent tough stance on NAFTA renegotiation was a good reason to be proud of our country.

Extradition treaty with the US wasn't questioned much before. I believe 90% of these requests are granted, so it seems the US are generally reasonable and not abusing the system. Still, everyone gets to argue their point in the court before the extradition. If we make exceptions to the normal legal process, our dedication to the rule of law will lose credibility.

It is particularly so after China's "arguments" like randomly detaining Canadians. Comparing these methods to Trump's, it's an easy choice to side with Trump as a lesser evil.

1: People criticise Trudeau for allegedly pressuring Jody Wilson Raybould to over rule the extradition request. Then the same people criticise Trudeau for the Meng arrest. Either we have rule of law or rule by executive fiat, we can't have both.

2: How are the forged AgCan vetrinary certificates Trudeau's fault?

Why is it that whenever someone criticizes Trudeau, his supporters' knee jerk reaction is to either bring up Harper or Scheer?
The conversation isn't about what Harper may have done or Scheer would do. It's about what Trudeau as the current PM of Canada should be doing.
That's the problem with the way politics is evolving in this country. Rather than just trying to figure out where the problem lies and finding a solution people just start with the blame game.
As much as I think Trudeau is a self righteous, narcissistic, entitled little twerp, he did not create this problem. He inherited it from whoever signed the extradition treaty.
That said, "along with great power comes great responsibility", so as the PM, it is his shit storm to deal with.

The big problem that I see with all of this is we (Canada) signed an extradition treaty without anyone thinking of implementing the necessary safeguards to deal with situations such as this.
Just like NATO has the doctrine that an attack on any NATO state is an attack on all NATO members so should these extradition treaties. When China retaliates against one nation simply enforcing the treaty, all other signatories should join together to exert pressure on Bejing. So far that is not happening.
Canada tries to be a good global neighbor and when the shit hits the fan all of our supposed allies hide under their desks. We saw the same thing when Freeland pissed off the Saudi's. While I disagree with how she did it, she was right and all of our allies including the US and Great Britain did fuck all to side with us.
Canada on it's own has no influence over Bejing. We are like a mosquito to an elephant to them. They have zero respect for Trudeau. The call him "Little Potatoe."
Where is Trump in all of this? Oh, he's said a few right things but has done nothing to pressure the Chinese.
I the end Trudeau needs to stop being such a pansie.
He needs to go to Trump and tell him that Trump has 48 hours to get the Chinese agree to start discussions (they won't even talk to us right now) to release our "hostages" and stop the ridiculous trade sanctions. From there the US needs to help us until this mess is settled, including buying more of our agricultural products to offset our losses in the Chinese market.
If Trump does not agree to this then tell him we are releasing Meng Wanzhou and tearing up the treaty.
It's time to start to play hardball with the US on this.

Cheers

As I understand it this has yet tot be confirmed and the Chinese claims in trade matters are not always the most truthful.
I'm curious to see about this.
I'm not saying that these certificates, including the seals placed on containers of meat products can't be illegally obtained but these things are very tightly controlled.
You just can't walk into any CIFA office and find them laying around. They are locked up and closely monitored as to who uses them, etc.
Also I'm sure just like any group in society, you may find one or vets working with CIFA who for the right amount of money would forge a document but those are probably very few and far between and the penalties, including loss of their licence to practice would be a monumental deterrent.

Cheers

To be clear, I am hugely disappointed with Trudeau but he is the lesser of two evils.

Scheer is going to be just as much a disappointment. I say that because when I saw he speak in Winnipeg he was so much ch like Trudeau. A solution for everything, so many promises he can’t possibly keep them all. He even said he would make sure the pipeline would go through(which went over really well). The thing is though, it was already approved by the Liberals. Again we have the rule of law thing. Trudeau can’t declare the project can go ahead without following the rules, and neither can Scheer.

I see Scheer as a puppet much like GWBush. He is a front man, not the man in charge. He sticks to scripted speaking points instead of actually debating.

It seems politicians say anything and everything to get elected.

cause they don't have any real arguments to support their dear leader

or like the above quote, don't know what they are talking about

Trudeau can decide, he can tell his Justice/Attorney General to let her go

of course it's completely the ministers call, no one is telling the minister to do it, no, no, lol

the Attorney General has the power to refuse/step in and cancel the extradition

no one has ever done it before, but the power is available

why do you think the 2nd most crooked piece of shit Liberal PM Chretien mouthed off about doing it 2 weeks ago

Perhaps laying the blame on Trudeau for these events is what brings up Scheer and Harper. Still its satisfying for them to blame everything on a PM who is not directly involved with the process.

Reading this thread, its apparent people do not know that the PM does not have the power to intercede on China's behalf because we have an extradition treaty in force with the USA. Well maybe he could but the resulting shit storm with the US is hardly worth turning over Meng Wanzhou to the Chinese.

The PM does not have the power to change the Chinese ruling on Canola or Pork. This is a political ploy pure and simple to twist Canada's arm to let Meng Wanzhou free. Her lawyers have chosen a weird stance stating that the laws of Canada do not apply to the alleged crimes against her. It's interesting that the USA has been remarkably quiet throughout this process. Is that because their case is weak or are they staying quiet intentionally to let the process proceed?

I read that her two allegations brought forward by the USA are:

1. Fraudulent transactions with Iran while there is a series of sanctions against Iran.
2. IP theft from T Moblie USA

Extradition requests can be applied for without standing treaty”s... “applied for locally”

Hence : Juliane Assange.

Will the USA simply apply for (make request) with Russia? Or should I say Trump with Vladimir ? Smile smile, wink wink... not a fucking chance.... like I said.. laughable..
I don't understand your post.

Assange was in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London England. He got the boot from there and is now serving a sentence in the UK. The US has requested they turn him over and its now before the courts.

Are you thinking Snowden?
