Is it me or is gas the most expensive it has ever been? I was taking to some people back east, and they are loosing their shirts at $1.30...… Hello I just paid $1.70

My question is how have the gas prices effected the way you travel?

Well, if any of the other board members would have you believe, gas taxes and carbon taxes apparently do nothing to impact productivity or the average human being who needs to drive.

I get it most of us drive anyways, but lets be serious. Its not realistic to keep paying so much. Every year we break a new gas record. WHat is it going to be next year. $2.00 OMG

Taxes are not the only thing driving up the prices. I just bought a new fuel efficient car, but it still is costing me just as much to use it. Supply and demand is a factor Im sure. The rest is just a scam

We are clearly paying the most taxes.
Yes. Vancouver has a rich history of having the highest fuel prices in Canada. As well as a rich history of the highest real estate prices. Interestingly, when you compare salaries people in Vancouver also accept lower salaries in many professions as well. Many moons ago when I lived in other parts of Canada, I was shocked how much less people from Vancouver were willing to accept in terms of salary. Vancouverites accept lower salaries compared to Calagarians or Torontonians. I can only conclude that Vancouverites on average do not know what they are actually worth or they are just passive in general in not negotiating harder when it comes to salaries. It's quite humorous when I lived in other parts of Canada and Vancouverites would continually tell me how awesome Vancouver is and in the same breath they would continually complain about cost of rent or property values. Funny thing is, from what I can tell now that I spend half the year in Vancouver, most Vancouverites steadfastly refuse to accept that their standard of living can be much better in other parts of Canada. Talk to some university students, a lot are dead set in staying in Vancouver and cannot even comprehend that their standard of living in many instances would be better if they moved to other parts of the country.

I hear what you are saying. I have lived all over Canada myself. Its not just that we take less for pay, but also spend so much more on rent, gas, food.... I know people back east renting whole houses, with huge yards for less then the cost of a one bedroom here. Its sad really. How do we take a stand. How do we become united in saying no more. Things will only keep getting worst.

I have no idea. I left Vancouver when I was younger and only came back once I was more established career wise and financially. But from my experience most Vancouverites do not want to leave. Can't help those that don't want to help themselves I guess.

It's a matter of perspective I guess. I've lived in Kits and love being close to the beach. I have property near Kananaskis, K-country trails/hiking is equally beautiful scenery, just different scenery. Amenities; in my opinion, there isn't much you can find in Vancouver that you couldn't find in Winnipeg, Edmonton, etc. Climate; fair point, Vancouver has relatively mild climate. That's said, having experienced prairie winters, I'll take minus 20 and snow over Vancouver's December rains;). Not saying you're one of these people, but a lot of Vancouervites in my opinion use mountains/oceans as an excuse to tolerate some of Vancouver's less desireable qualities like high cost of living and lower salaries, simply to justify their desire to not leave. I always tell younger Vancouverites "what do you have to lose, Vancouver and it's mountains and its oceans will always be there...you can always go back."

My only Question is, where do You live right now ?

Ok well Alberta has better gas prices, but not that great
Everybody in every province complains about gas prices. As Canadians we have certain undeniable rights:
1) Hockey is and will always be our game
2) Bitching about gasoline prices
3) Cross border shopping
4) Universal Health Care

We're being gouged, as usual, by the almighty Petroleum companies !

If ever, there was a Case of collusion, it's just one of the examples .

Gas prices Today, as 4:30 PM Pacific Time:

Vancouver

Calgary

Edmonton

You might get Me to consider Calgary with the Foothills, and the Chinooks...

But it'd be a Frosty Day in Hell, before I'd even think about Edmonton !

It's still a premium I'll disgruntlingly pay, to stay in the beautiful Rainforest of the Fraser Valley !

Cheers

P.S. If Alberta wants BC's cooperation, start sending Us, some cheap Gas !
I dislike dealing with US Customs, these days .

I get it, I feel the pain too! All I can say about collusion is this; if the oil companies can charge whatever they want for fuel; why would they only gouge or gouge Vancouver more than anyone else. Profit maximizing collusion would say let's gouge Edmonton and Calgary in the same manner if they can charge whatever they want. Hate to say it; but Alberta crude is sold into BC refineries at the same price it's sold into Alberta refineries and the same price it's sold into US refineries. As a general rule; if you want the price of something to be lower; the consumer is always best served when there is oversupply. When you walk into the Porsche dealership looking for that rare Porsche that the dealership only has one of, it's better for you to be the only one wanting to buy it vs walking in and finding 8 other people who want to buy that same rare Porsche. Supply can work in your favour or it can work against you. It's not just a question of Alberta's oil:
1) More of it needs to get to BC, but pipelines are a constraint
2) Refining capacity might also be a constraint
3) Ever increasing fuel taxes; Vancouver pays 17 cents per litre as a transit tax, and that's going up to 18.5 cents
In any event; quickest way to bring prices down is to increase supply. There's just too many political hurdles preventing additional supply. Alberta has tons of supply, more refining capacity and less fuel taxes in general, so they have lower pump prices. It's tough for a lot people to wrap their heads around because people's natural inclination is "gasoline is gasoline, it should be the same price", there's just too much that goes into the actual price at the pump.
